by Keri Shull

Are you looking for a unique place to do some holiday shopping this year? Look no further than one of the many holiday markets which are springing up around the DMV this December!

These awesome markets are the perfect chance to find unique gifts for your family and friends this winter. Even better, you can do it while taking in a cultural experience that you can’t find anywhere else.

There are going to ton of markets across the D.C. metro area in December 2019 — here are some of our favorites!

Kris Kringle Christmas Market

A German Holiday Market in Southern Maryland

Located in La Plata, Maryland, the Kris Kringle Christmas Market is designed to emulate the world-famous Christmas markets of Germany. This event, which is celebrating its 7th consecutive year, is packed with things to see and do.

Visitors to this holiday market can browse the homemade wares of local artisans, listen to live music, and sample delicious seasonal food. This event is perfect for families, as the Kris Kringle Christmas Market is dedicated to providing a family-friendly experience for all visitors.

The 2019 Kris Kringle Christmas Market will be held in the middle of December 2019, and the tree lighting will be at 5:00 PM on December 13. Please note that there is an admission fee of $3.00, which benefits The Southern Maryland Food Bank, the Charles County Association of Emergency Medical Services, and the Charles County Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Heurich House Museum Christkindlmarkt

Holiday Market in D.C.’s historic heart

This 3-day holiday market is held annually in the Heurich House Museum, also known as the Brewmaster’s Castle. In 1894, local artisans built this historic mansion — today, the museum honors this legacy by creating a market for the DMV’s artisans.

Visitors to the Christkindlmarkt can stroll through the house museum’s breathtaking gardens and browse the handmade goods of over 40 local artists from DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

In addition to the holiday market, you can take a guided tour of the beautiful, seasonally-decorated historic home.

Swedish Christmas Bazaar

A Christmas Market with a Scandinavian twist

Take a break from the German-style holiday markets by visiting the Swedish Christmas Bazaar, hosted by the Swedish Women’s Educational Association. This market, also known as a Julmarknad, will be full of opportunities to try traditional Swedish sweets and delicacies. In addition, visitors can explore other Scandinavian goods, including glassware, textiles, and books.

This unique holiday market is a great opportunity to explore and learn more about Swedish culture, while also getting one-of-a-kind gifts for your loved ones this holiday season!

The 2019 Julmarknad will be held on December 7th, and proceeds from the event will be used to fund further cultural events hosted in DC by the Swedish Women’s Educational Association.

Holiday Market at Del Ray Artisans

Holiday Market meets local art show in Alexandria

If you are an art lover (or have one that you are shopping for!) you owe it to yourself to check out the Holiday Market at Del Ray Artisans. This market, in one of the artsiest neighborhoods of Alexandria, is open the first 3 weekends of December.

Each weekend, the holiday market will feature a different collection of local artists — and admission is completely free! In efforts to help promote community growth and Alexandria’s artistic scene, all artists are donating a portion of their sales to the Del Ray Artisans.

Downtown Holiday Market

D.C.’s Holiday Market lasts all month long

Located just steps from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Gallery Place metro station, the Downtown Holiday Market is a month-long holiday market in the heart of Downtown Washington, D.C. The Downtown D.C. Business Improvement District manages this holiday market, which features more than 150 local artisans and boutique businesses.

Each day, 60 exhibitors offer their diverse and unique wares, so make sure to stop by a few different times during December to see what they have on display!

Once you’ve finished your holiday shopping, stick around the holiday market to try food from a local vendor or listen to live music on the Market Stage.

These are just some of the many amazing holiday markets in the DMV — but they’re a great place to start! These markets allow you to find unique, thoughtful gifts for your loved ones while simultaneously supporting local artists.

It’s a true win-win scenario!
