Chantilly is an industrious and affordable town 25 miles outside of Washington D.C. in western Fairfax County. As the 40th largest community in Virginia, Chantilly is significantly smaller than the other most popular Northern Virginia neighborhoods with a population of about 25,000 people. History of Chantilly

In the 1700s, Chantilly was home to a number of colonial plantations. The two most notable plantations were the Chantilly Plantation — which lent its name to the town — and the Sully Plantation, which is now the Sully Historic Site. During the Civil War, the area now known as Chantilly suffered while occupied by Northern forces. Many farms, manors and homes were burned or destroyed by Federal troops in 1863, including the Chantilly Plantation. The town then focused on rebuilding throughout the remainder of the 19th century, helped along by the construction of the Little River Turnpike. However, Chantilly remained a small, rural town until the 1980s. Commercial and residential developers began filling in the farmland south of Dulles Airport with businesses, shopping centers, and subdivisions, and ultimately transformed it into the Washingtonian suburb it is today.

The housing stock in Chantilly is primarily made up of single-family homes, garden-style condos, and new construction townhomes. The median home cost in Chantilly is around half a million dollars, which is about the same as the nearby community of Ashburn but significantly more affordable than areas closer to D.C. like Mclean and Arlington. Most homes are on perfectly manicured, tree dappled lots, and feature a variety of styles and floor plans. Flat Lick Stream Valley Park offers tree-lined paths for runners, dog-walkers, or bicyclists along with creeks and ponds for freshwater fishing. There are also three different golf courses located in Chantilly as well as a gun range for sharp shooters.

In this busy, small town, locals enjoy a shared sense of well-being and security. It has that close-knit feel that families love. Only 11 percent of residents in Chantilly identify themselves as single residents. The area is very popular with families with young children because of the top-rated public schools and safe subdivisions. Nearly 75 percent of Chantilly’s population is college educated, making it one of the most well-educated communities in Virginia. Most residents in Chantilly know each other through school fundraisers, home-grown businesses, or just from running into each other at the most popular local attractions.
