Maryland, one of the 13 original states and the first American colony to establish religious freedom, is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered by Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington D.C., and West Virginia. During its history, it contained the well-known Mason-Dixon line border and was the 7th state to ratify the U.S. constitution. With a population of over 6 million and containing 23 counties, Maryland’s largest city is Baltimore and its capital is Annapolis. Located in close proximity to the nation’s capital and home to famous crabcakes, Maryland experiences a lot of tourism. Visitors tend to flock to the city of Baltimore, beaches like Ocean City, and Maryland’s natural wonders like Gunpowder Falls State Park.

The state’s economy is mainly based on manufacturing and government services. Health care is also a major source of economic activity in Maryland. Public education in Maryland is controlled by the state board of education mainly and the state has a wide range of renowned schools like the prominent Johns Hopkins University. With its well-developed network of interstate highways and rail services, Maryland is uniquely situated for easy travel between Washington D.C. and Virginia.
