6 Unique Holiday Activities In The D.C. Area

Holiday season is finally upon us! Before you know it, schools will be letting out for winter break, relatives will be coming to visit, and you’ll be looking for ways to entertain everyone!

There are a ton of upcoming holiday activities in the D.C. area — in fact, there are almost too many to choose from!

We know how stressful that can be with so much going on during the winter … that’s why we’ve put together a list of some of the best, and most unique, holiday activities in D.C. this Yuletide season!

Take in the holiday spirit at Rosslyn Cheer

Swing by Central Place Plaza, right by the Rosslyn Metro station, for a quick dose of holiday cheer! Festivities will commence in two blocks: stop by at lunch (from 11 AM – 1 PM) for free hot chocolate and live music, and make sure to return at 6 PM for the lighting of a holiday tree!

During both times of this easy, heartwarming holiday activity, you can treat yourself to delicious cookies and live music, as well as all the wonderful options for fun and dining in Rosslyn!

Go on a trip to Gingertown

When it comes to celebrating the holidays, few traditions are as delicious and impressive as the perfect blend of architecture and food — gingerbread houses!

For the master gingerbread engineers participating in Gingertown D.C., this classic (and delicious) past-time is a chance to show off their creativity and construction prowess. While the creation process takes place behind closed doors, the public can view the complete projects beginning on December 3, with the grand reveal happening at 5:30 PM.

Which gingerbread village is going to be the most impressive? Come down to Gingertown and decide for yourself!

Enjoy a live performance of a classic holiday tale

For the tenth year in a row, the award winning Olney Theatre Center is putting on a stage performance of Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol.

This annual event is the perfect opportunity to hear the classic tale from a fresh new perspective, while simultaneously supporting the local artistic scene!

Take a class, learn something new

School may be letting out for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn something this winter! As the weather gets colder, there are tons of options for classes, seminars, and lectures you can attend, covering a wide variety of topics! After all — who says that your holiday activities can’t be educational and  fun?

We would personally recommend the Home Buyer Seminar, where you can learn the best ways to save big on your dream home! This course, which is taught by the DMV’s top-selling real estate team, will empower you to win big when you are finding and buying a home in the area. The Keri Shull Team holds these seminars regularly — the next one is on Monday, December 9th, at 6:00 PM.

Prance with animal lanterns at ZooLights

Each winter, the National Zoo becomes a wonderland of illumination, attracting thousands of visitors to the beautiful zoological park. This year, the highlights include a collection of animal lanterns and an award-winning exhibit entitled “Entre les Rangs.”

For families and individuals alike, ZooLights is one of the most unique and breathtaking holiday activities that you can do in the DMV — so it’s perfect for everyone!

As part of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Zoo is free to the public, even during special event nights like ZooLights!

The ZooLights event will run from November 29th through January 1, though the Zoo will be closed on December 24th, 25th, and 31st.

Join diplomats in celebrating the world’s varied cultures at Winternational

On December 5th, from 11 AM – 3 PM, join the varied populace of D.C. in celebrating the world’s cultures at the Winternational Embassy Showcase! This celebration of culture will feature a massive marketplace of food, art, and handicrafts, as well as information about tourism and travel.

Winternational is a holiday activity that free and open to all public attendees — so show up on the 5th and learn more about the unique and varied cultures of the world!
