Best Schools in Reston, VA for Families Moving to the Area

Best Schools in Reston, VA for Families Moving to the Area

Quick Answer: The Reston Schools Relocating Families Research First

If you are moving to Reston, Virginia with school-age children, the schools you will hear about most are the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) inside the community: South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School, and a ring of elementary schools that includes Sunrise Valley, Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences, Aldrin, Terraset, Forest Edge, Lake Anne, Dogwood and Armstrong, plus Fox Mill just over the Herndon line. Some northern Reston addresses feed Herndon Middle and Herndon High instead.

There is no honest single "best" school here. What Reston offers a relocating family is an unusual range of genuinely different programs inside a few square miles, and each one is reached in a different way:

  • By address: your base elementary, middle and high school, which you confirm in the official FCPS Boundary Locator.
  • By screening: full-time Level IV Advanced Academic Program (AAP) centers at Forest Edge, Hunters Woods and Sunrise Valley for grades 3 to 6, and at Langston Hughes for grades 7 and 8.
  • By lottery: Lake Anne's two-way Spanish immersion, Fox Mill's partial Japanese immersion, and the arts and sciences magnet seats at Hunters Woods.
  • By application: regional options such as Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and the FCPS career academies.

Every fact on this page was read from FCPS's own school websites, school profiles and division pages in October 2026. Boundaries and programs change, and two boundary decisions affect this area right now, so treat this as a map for your research and then verify the specific address you are buying.

How a Child Actually Lands in a Reston School

Most relocation guides list schools as if you could pick one. In Fairfax County you mostly cannot, and understanding the four routes above is what turns a list of names into a plan.

Your base school comes with the house. FCPS assigns every address to one elementary, one middle and one high school. In Reston that is usually the South Lakes pyramid, but not always: Aldrin and Armstrong carry Reston addresses and sit in the Herndon pyramid. Our data-backed breakdown of Reston's schools covers that pyramid split, so we will not repeat it here.

Center programs come with eligibility, not with the house. A child found eligible for full-time Level IV services attends the AAP center FCPS assigns to their base school, which is often a different building. Living beside a center does not place a child in it.

Immersion and magnet seats come with a lottery. The immersion programs say plainly on their own pages that there are no formal entry criteria, that they are open only to Fairfax County residents, and that students are enrolled by lottery. The Hunters Woods magnet works the same way.

Regional schools come with an application. They sit outside the pyramid system and run on their own calendars.

The practical point for a family on a relocation deadline: only the first route is decided by your purchase. The other three depend on timing, paperwork and, in two cases, luck.

Reston's Elementary Schools at a Glance

The pyramid column reflects FCPS's schools directory for 2026–27; the school-day times come from each school's own bell schedule page. Start times are worth a look before you choose a house: across these nine schools the morning bell ranges from 8:45 a.m. to 9:20 a.m., which matters for two working parents lining up before-school care and a commute.

What Makes Each Elementary School Distinct

Here is what each school says about itself, in its own words where possible. These are not rankings. They are the details a parent would want before a first visit.

Sunrise Valley Elementary School

Sunrise Valley describes itself as founded on a strong instructional program that enables students to become independent learners and problem solvers, with high expectations for all students and, in its words, collaboration over competition. It hosts a full-time AAP center, so its classrooms include children from other attendance areas. In October 2025 the school announced it had received Virginia's Purple Star designation, which recognises support for military-connected families, for the third time. For a family arriving on military orders, that means a named point of contact and a structured welcome for new students.

Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

Hunters Woods serves three groups at once: neighborhood students, magnet students and students in the Level IV Advanced Academic Program. The arts are woven through the curriculum using Responsive Instruction, arts integration, STEAM and project-based learning, and the school year is built around signature events: Wonderfest, Tableau Night, The Living History Museum, a Global Awareness Technology Project, and an original student-created production performed in partnership with George Mason University. Its own list of highlights adds violin in third grade, a dance studio, an artist-in-residence program and outdoor classrooms.

Forest Edge Elementary School

Forest Edge opened on 7 September 1971 as the third elementary school built in Reston, after Lake Anne and Hunters Woods. Its school history page is one of the best short reads on early Reston: the building was designed by Charles M. Goodman Associates as an "open school", with six teaching pods named after lunar craters from the Apollo 15 mission. Today FCPS describes a student body from many countries that collectively speaks more than 30 languages, and the school serves as the full-time Advanced Academic Center for qualified students in grades 3 through 6 from several nearby schools.

Terraset Elementary School

Terraset is the building visitors ask about. It opened on 22 February 1977, built into a wooded knoll on 14 acres with soil placed over the structure as insulation during the energy crisis of the 1970s. Its history page records that the solar-panel system was funded by a donation from Saudi Arabia after a National Science Foundation grant was turned down, and that more than 15,000 visitors came in its first year. The school reopened after a full renovation in fall 2016, and its outdoor learning program now uses the green roof.

Aldrin Elementary School

Aldrin opened in September 1994, named for astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the 25th anniversary year of the Apollo 11 landing. It serves preschool, including preschool autism classes, through grade 6, and says its staff provide meaningful and enriching lessons tailored to each student's individual needs, with positive two-way communication between parents and staff and quarterly principal coffees. It is one of the two Reston-address schools in the Herndon pyramid.

Lake Anne Elementary School

Lake Anne has served Reston since 1966 and draws students both from its own neighborhood and, through its immersion program, from across the county. Its two-way Spanish immersion program runs from kindergarten through grade 6: students spend roughly half of each day learning mathematics, science and health in Spanish, and the other half learning social studies, language arts and reading in English. The school has been a Virginia Purple Star School since 2025 and runs a student ambassador program to welcome new arrivals.

Dogwood Elementary School

Dogwood is an IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and states its mission as developing a globally-minded community engaged in inquiry. FCPS lists PreK and Early Head Start, a foreign language in the elementary school program, reduced class sizes in kindergarten through grade 3, and a parent resource center with bilingual family liaisons.

Armstrong and Fox Mill Elementary Schools

Armstrong, on Lake Newport Road, houses a comprehensive special education services site alongside its local Level IV program. Fox Mill opened in 1979, runs a partial Japanese immersion program for grades 1 through 6 that is entered by lottery, and pairs younger students with mentors from South Lakes High School through a reading program. Fox Mill's middle- and high-school path is changing; see the boundary section below.

Advanced Academics: Which Center Serves Which School

Every FCPS elementary school offers some advanced academic services, and each has an Advanced Academic Resource Teacher. Full-time Level IV services are delivered either at a center or, at some schools, through a local full-time program. FCPS publishes which center each base school feeds:

Source: FCPS center assignments page, which is labelled 2025–26. Note that Aldrin and Armstrong, though in the Herndon pyramid, send full-time Level IV students to Langston Hughes for grades 7 and 8.

If you are arriving mid-year, FCPS runs a separate screening window for new students. For the 2026–27 year, the full-time referral for new FCPS students in grades 3 to 7 who enrolled after January 2026 is due to the school's Advanced Academic Resource Teacher by 15 October 2026, eligibility decisions are sent on 5 January 2027, and eligible students may start at a full-time site from 2 February 2027. The main cycle accepts referrals until 15 December 2026 for placement in fall 2027. FCPS's identification and placement page has the full schedule, and its page for students new to FCPS explains what to submit: register first, then provide report cards, an ability test score and work samples.

Middle School: Langston Hughes and Herndon Middle

Fairfax County middle schools serve grades 7 and 8, which surprises families moving from systems that start middle school at grade 6. A child who arrives in Reston in fifth grade still has two elementary years ahead.

Langston Hughes Middle School, on Ridge Heights Road beside Terraset, places every student in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, which continues at South Lakes High School. FCPS lists both a center-based and a local Level IV program, the continuation of Lake Anne's Spanish immersion, career and technical education, Spanish and French, AVID, and algebra for all eighth graders.

Herndon Middle School serves students from Herndon and Reston and describes families who come from more than 45 countries and speak more than 47 languages. Its profile lists honors classes in the four core subjects, partial immersion in French and Spanish, theater and theater tech, and a bike shop among its activities. Herndon Middle has no full-time AAP center of its own.

High School: South Lakes and Herndon High

South Lakes High School is an International Baccalaureate school. Its IB pages set out the Middle Years Program for grades 9 and 10, ending with a Personal Project in tenth grade, then two routes in grades 11 and 12: the academic Diploma Programme and the Career-related Programme, in which a student combines a career and technical pathway with IB courses. Its career and technical education includes automotive technology, culinary arts, marketing, business and information technology, and technology and engineering, plus Army JROTC, AVID and dual enrollment.

Herndon High School, which serves students from Herndon, Reston and Great Falls, takes the other main advanced route in Fairfax County: a full range of Advanced Placement courses, an Advanced Placement Diploma program, dual enrollment and honors courses in grades 9 through 12, alongside Navy JROTC, a robotics team and the "Spirit of Herndon" marching band.

The high school day is earlier than many families expect: both schools list 8:10 a.m. to 2:55 p.m., and Hughes and Herndon Middle start at 7:30 a.m. The useful distinction for a relocating family is not that one route is stronger. IB is a coherent programme with its own assessments and a continuum that, in the South Lakes pyramid, starts at Dogwood and runs through Langston Hughes. AP is course by course and lets a student build a schedule around their strongest subjects. Ask which suits your child before you ask which pyramid an address sits in.

Beyond Your Base School: Magnet, Immersion, TJ and the Academies

These options run on fixed annual calendars, so a family moving in spring or summer can miss a cycle entirely. The dates below are the most recent FCPS has published.

  • Language immersion. FCPS's immersion page says students enter by lottery in kindergarten or first grade, with later entry at the principal's discretion. Lake Anne's countywide Spanish lottery continues at Langston Hughes; Fox Mill's Japanese program continues at Carson Middle. FCPS does not provide bus service from outside the immersion school's own attendance area. For 2026–27 the online application opened on 12 January 2026; the 2027–28 dates had not been posted when we checked.
  • The Hunters Woods magnet. Seats are filled by random lottery, open to Fairfax County residents already registered in FCPS. The 2026–27 window ran from 27 February to 27 March 2026 for students entering kindergarten through grade 5, according to FCPS's elementary magnet lottery page. A magnet seat is separate from AAP placement.
  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Current eighth graders apply in the fall. For the class entering in fall 2027, FCPS's freshman application page lists applications opening on 5 October 2026 and closing at 4 p.m. on 30 October 2026, with an essay assessment on 9 January 2027. A family that arrives in Reston after October of eighth grade has missed that year's round.
  • The academies. FCPS runs career and technical academies, including Chantilly Academy, that any FCPS high school student can apply to, with transportation depending on the base school. See the academies and specialized programs page.

Boundary Changes: What 2026–27 and 2027–28 Mean for Reston

Two separate School Board decisions are worth knowing about if you are buying in or near Reston now.

The comprehensive boundary review, effective 2026–27. On 22 January 2026 the School Board approved FCPS's first comprehensive boundary review in more than 40 years. In the final adopted plan, the elementary, middle and high schools with Reston addresses kept their boundaries; the nearest change was to Coates Elementary on the Herndon side. FCPS says the Boundary Locator was updated with 2026–27 assignments in July 2026, and its boundary FAQ explains which current students may stay at their old school.

The Skyview High School and western pyramids decision, effective 2027–28. On 16 July 2026 the Board unanimously approved boundaries for the new Skyview High School and five western pyramids, including South Lakes. FCPS says elementary attendance boundaries will not change, but feeder patterns, meaning which middle and high school an elementary school sends students to, may. Fox Mill's own FCPS profile already lists it in the Skyview High pyramid, while the main directory still shows South Lakes for 2026–27.

What this means in practice: if your child will be in middle or high school in 2027–28 or later, check the address for both years. Use the Boundary Locator for the current year and FCPS's Boundary Explorer for the approved changes, and if the two disagree, call FCPS before you write an offer.

A One-Week Research Plan for Families Moving From Out of Town

You cannot drop into a school every afternoon from another state, but you can do almost all of the useful research remotely. This is the order we suggest:

  1. Day one: confirm assignments. Put every shortlisted address into the Boundary Locator and write down all three schools, then check the Boundary Explorer for 2027–28. A listing description or an online map is not a substitute.
  2. Day two: read the FCPS school profile. Every school site links to an FCPS profile with tabs for demographics, staffing, test results and membership. Read the summary and program list rather than starting with one number, and check the "last updated" dates.
  3. Day three: read the state's view. The Virginia Department of Education's School Quality Profiles report accreditation and assessment results by school. When we checked in October 2026 the site was offline for annual maintenance, so return to it. In the meantime, FCPS reported in December 2025 that all of its schools remain fully accredited and that all of its comprehensive high schools were rated "distinguished" or "on track" in the first year of Virginia's new School Performance and Support Framework.
  4. Day four: read the school's own plan. Each school publishes a School Innovation and Improvement Plan with its goals for the year. It is the clearest statement of what the leadership is working on now.
  5. Day five: map the school day. Elementary bells in Reston range from 8:45 a.m. at Fox Mill to 9:20 a.m. at Aldrin, Sunrise Valley and Terraset, while middle schools start at 7:30 a.m. Match those times to your commute and to before- and after-school care before you choose a house.
  6. Days six and seven: talk to people. Call the front office or school counselor about your child's grade and needs, and look at the PTA's calendar. If a visit is possible, ask about visitor procedures before you travel.

Do that and you will know more about your actual assigned schools than most families touring alongside you, without relying on anyone's ranking, including ours.

Enrolling After You Move

FCPS registration follows residence, so the paperwork usually comes after the closing or the lease signing, not before. FCPS's online registration page lists what to have ready:

  • Proof of residence: FCPS's residency attestation plus a deed or lease, or the attestation plus three supporting documents.
  • The child's documents: birth certificate, immunization records, a physical examination for students new to elementary school, TB screening where it applies, and contact details for the previous school.
  • A parent's photo ID.

Kindergartners register at their neighborhood school and must turn five on or before 30 September of the school year; FCPS's registration hub covers every grade. Before- and after-school care at most elementary schools is School-Age Child Care, run by Fairfax County's Department of Neighborhood and Community Services rather than by FCPS, and it was taking applications for both 2026–27 and 2027–28 when we checked; start on the SACC registration page as soon as you know your school. If you are relying on SACC to make a commute work, ask about availability at your specific school early.

Lining Up the School Plan With the Home Search

School research and house-hunting compete for the same few weeks, and in Reston the house-hunting clock runs fast. Across 1,047 closed residential sales in ZIP codes 20190, 20191 and 20194 between 9 September 2025 and 9 September 2026, the median home went under contract in 8 days and closed at a median of 100.0% of list price, according to Bright MLS. That speed shapes how a school-focused family should work:

  • Verify before you tour. In an eight-day market there is rarely time to research a school once a home you like appears.
  • Decide which route matters. If your plan depends on a base school, the address is decisive. If it depends on AAP, immersion, the magnet or IB, timing and paperwork matter as much as the address.
  • Think in pyramids, not just elementary schools. A child entering grade 4 will spend most of their Reston schooling in middle and high school, so read all three assignments together, for this year and next.
  • Remember boundaries move. A school assignment is a fact about an address today, not a promise about it in five years.

Our Reston neighborhood guide gives the lay of the land, and the live Reston home search lets you run the boundary check on real listings as they appear.

How the KS Team Helps Families Relocating to Reston

As the KS Team, we help clients choose neighborhoods based not just on price, but on lifestyle, long-term value and opportunity. For a family relocating to Reston that usually means three practical things:

  • Running the boundary check with you on every home you shortlist, for the current year and for 2027–28, so you know the assignment before you tour.
  • Building the search around the school route that matters to you, whether that is a base school, an AAP center, an immersion or magnet lottery, or an IB or AP pathway.
  • Timing the move against FCPS registration, screening windows, lottery dates and the start of the school year, and fitting home tours, school calls and lender approvals into the same trip.

Our relocating to Reston page explains how we structure a move from out of the area. If you are selling a home elsewhere in the DMV to fund the move, a free home valuation is a sensible first step, and our mortgage calculator helps you test a budget before you tour.

Living in Reston: The Places Around the Schools

Reston was planned around village centers, and the schools sit inside that plan. Lake Anne Elementary is a short walk from Lake Anne Plaza, Reston's original village center. Hunters Woods sits near the Hunters Woods Village Center and Reston Community Center Hunters Woods, home to the Terry Smith Aquatics Center and the CenterStage theater. Langston Hughes, Terraset and South Lakes High School sit side by side on Ridge Heights Road and South Lakes Drive, close to Lake Thoreau. Aldrin and Armstrong are on the north side near Lake Newport and the North Point Village Center.

Between them runs the network maintained by Reston Association: paths, pools, lakes including Lake Audubon, and natural areas such as the Walker Nature Center. The Reston Regional Library near Reston Town Center is the obvious homework stop, and Lake Fairfax Park is the big weekend outlet. For commuting parents, the Silver Line stops at Wiehle-Reston East and Reston Town Center, and the Dulles Toll Road, Reston Parkway, Wiehle Avenue, Baron Cameron Avenue and the Fairfax County Parkway carry most car trips across Northern Virginia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best schools in Reston, VA for families moving to the area?

The right school depends on your child, but the schools relocating families research most are South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School, and elementary schools including Sunrise Valley, Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences, Aldrin, Terraset, Forest Edge, Lake Anne and Dogwood. Some northern Reston addresses feed Herndon Middle and Herndon High. Confirm the schools for any address in the FCPS Boundary Locator.

Which Reston elementary schools host a full-time AAP center?

Forest Edge, Hunters Woods and Sunrise Valley host full-time Level IV centers for grades 3 to 6, and Langston Hughes hosts the middle school center. Aldrin, Armstrong, Dogwood, Lake Anne and Terraset offer local full-time programs and send center students to Forest Edge or Sunrise Valley. A child must be found eligible through FCPS screening to attend a center.

Are there language immersion programs in Reston?

Yes. Lake Anne Elementary runs two-way Spanish immersion from kindergarten through grade 6, continuing at Langston Hughes, and Fox Mill Elementary runs partial Japanese immersion for grades 1 through 6. Both are open to Fairfax County residents and fill by lottery, so living nearby does not guarantee a place.

Does South Lakes High School offer the International Baccalaureate?

Yes. South Lakes offers the IB Middle Years Program in grades 9 and 10, then the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Programme in grades 11 and 12. Langston Hughes Middle School places all students in the Middle Years Program, and Dogwood Elementary offers the Primary Years Programme. Herndon High offers Advanced Placement instead.

Are Reston school boundaries changing?

The boundary review that took effect in 2026–27 left the schools with Reston addresses unchanged. A separate decision for Skyview High School, effective 2027–28, includes the South Lakes pyramid and may change which middle and high school some elementary schools feed, including Fox Mill. Check any address in both the Boundary Locator and the Boundary Explorer.

When should we start school research if we are relocating?

Before you start touring homes. Reston's median home sold in 8 days over the last year, and AAP screening, immersion and magnet lotteries and Thomas Jefferson admissions all run on fixed calendars that a spring or summer move can miss.

What are the next steps?

Write down the school route that matters most to your family, check its dates, then shortlist homes and run each address through the Boundary Locator. We can line up home tours in the matching part of Reston for the same visit.

Planning a Move to Reston?

If you are relocating to Reston with children, the most useful thing we can do is put the school plan and the home search on the same timeline. Get in touch with your children's grades and your move date, browse homes for sale in Reston, or see what is open this weekend.
