Eastern Market Living, Dining, and Exploring

Eastern Market Living, Dining, and Exploring

The DC neighborhood of Eastern Market is a vibrant subcommunity of Capitol Hill. But what distinguishes it from the famous historic area that it belongs to? Let’s dive into what makes Eastern Market distinctive and special in its own right.

ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Located to the north of Barracks Row and Navy Yard, Eastern Market is a bustling and family-friendly neighborhood filled with things to do. This popular hub attracts foodies, artists, and shoppers due to its lively restaurant scene, fresh local produce, and abundance of handmade crafts. Characterized by historic charm, the suburb offers beautiful natural surroundings and great walkability to residents and visitors.

Eastern Market also possesses a rich history of its outside of the broader Capitol Hill community. Its origins go back to 1873 when the market that gave the neighborhood its namesake was completed. Designed by Adolf Cluss, a notable local architect of its time and appearing in Pierre L’Enfant’s 18th-century plans for Washington, The Eastern Market building is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Despite suffering critical fire damage in 2007, the historic building was rebuilt and restored to its original glory by 2009 with the help of its community.
