Quick Answer: Public or Private School in Reston?
For most families relocating to Reston, Virginia, the real choice is not between a good option and a bad one. It is between two systems that work in opposite ways. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) charges no tuition, assigns your child to schools by the address you buy, and offers several specialist routes inside Reston that are reached by screening or lottery. Private, independent and faith-based schools in and around Reston charge tuition, choose their students on their own admissions calendars, and usually mean a daily drive or a paid bus.
Question | FCPS in Reston | Private and independent schools nearby |
|---|---|---|
Cost | No tuition; some program and care fees | Published 2026–27 tuition from under $9,000 at a parish school's Catholic rate to more than $56,000 for upper school at Flint Hill |
How a child gets in | Base school by address; AAP centers by screening; immersion and magnet seats by lottery | Application, assessment or interview, then an offer |
When you decide | Register once you have proof of residence; program windows run on FCPS calendars | Most deadlines fall between November and February for the following fall |
Getting there | FCPS bus to the base school | Parent driving, or a school bus where the school runs one |
What it does to your home search | The address decides the school, so the boundary drives the search | The drive decides the shortlist, so the commute drives the search |
Everything below was read from FCPS pages and the schools' own websites in October 2026. Tuition, deadlines and bus routes change every year, so treat each link as the source of truth.
Start With Three Questions, Not a Ranking
Families who make this decision well tend to answer three questions in order, and only then look at houses.
- What does this child need that a large system might not provide, or that a small school might not? A child who thrives on breadth, a big peer group and a long menu of electives is a different case from a child who needs a small class, a particular teaching method or a faith setting.
- Where does your arrival date fall against each calendar? Public enrollment follows your address and can happen once you live here. Most private admissions run on a fixed annual cycle that fills seats months before a typical spring or summer move.
- How far will you drive twice a day? A public school is usually close to home by design. A private school may be fifteen to thirty minutes away, every school day, for years.
Answer those honestly and the choice often makes itself. Skip them and families tend to end up paying for an address that serves a school they do not use, or committing to a commute they did not price in.
The Public Route: What FCPS Gives a Reston Family Without Tuition
The case for Fairfax County Public Schools in Reston is not only that it is free at the point of use. It is that one public system offers several distinct academic routes inside the same community, and a child can move between them as they change.
- A base school by address. Every home is assigned an elementary, a middle and a high school. Most of Reston feeds Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High; some northern Reston addresses feed Herndon Middle and Herndon High. Check the exact address in the FCPS Boundary Locator.
- Full-time advanced academics by screening. FCPS runs full-time Level IV Advanced Academic Program centers at Forest Edge, Hunters Woods and Sunrise Valley elementary schools and at Langston Hughes Middle School. Eligibility comes from an FCPS screening process, not from where you live.
- Language immersion by lottery. Lake Anne Elementary runs two-way Spanish immersion from kindergarten and Fox Mill Elementary runs partial Japanese immersion from first grade. Both are open to any Fairfax County resident and fill by lottery.
- Two high school models. South Lakes is an International Baccalaureate school, with the IB Middle Years Program in grades 9 and 10 and both the IB Diploma and IB Career-related Programmes in grades 11 and 12. Herndon High offers a full range of Advanced Placement courses and dual enrollment.
- Regional options by application. These include Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, which admits eighth graders from across the region.
For the school-by-school detail and the two-pyramid split, see our data-backed look at Reston's schools. The trade-off of the public route is control: you cannot choose your base school, center and lottery places depend on screening and chance, and a boundary decision can change an address's assignment. FCPS has already approved changes to middle and high school feeder patterns in the South Lakes pyramid from 2027–28, so check any address for both this year and next. A private school offers the opposite bargain: you choose the school and pay for it, and the school chooses you.
Private and Independent Schools in and Near Reston
Reston's private-school options fall into three groups: a cluster of small schools inside Reston itself, a ring of Catholic, Christian and gifted-focused schools in Herndon, Chantilly and Dulles, and the larger independent schools of Oakton, Vienna and McLean. Every school below was confirmed as operating from its own website in October 2026, and tuition appears only where the school publishes it.

A few notes the table cannot carry. There is no Catholic day school inside Reston itself: St. John Neumann parish runs a preschool and St. Thomas à Becket runs religious education, so Catholic families typically look to St. Joseph in Herndon or the Chantilly parish schools. Some schools have moved in recent years, including Fairfax Christian School, which is now in Dulles, so check the campus address before you plan a commute. And at least one Montessori name from older Reston school lists could not be confirmed as operating today, which is why it does not appear here.
What Private School Costs, From the Schools' Own Pages
Published 2026–27 tuition across the schools above runs from $8,738 (Saint Timothy's Catholic rate for kindergarten to grade 8) to $56,965 (Flint Hill's upper school). Among the schools inside Reston that publish figures, tuition runs from $15,990 (Sunset Hills Montessori kindergarten) to $32,750 (Ideaventions Academy's upper school). A few patterns are worth knowing before you build a budget:
- Faith schools often price by affiliation. The Catholic parish schools and St. Paul VI publish lower rates for registered Catholic families. Ask exactly what counts.
- Tuition is rarely the whole bill. The Academy of Christian Education, for example, lists a $50 application fee and a $1,000 enrollment fee for new families on its fee schedule, alongside a 10% sibling discount. Expect application fees, enrollment deposits, technology and activity fees, uniforms, lunch, and before- and after-school care at most schools.
- Transportation is often a separate line. Flint Hill lists $4,200 per student for round-trip bus service in 2026–27, and Oakcrest lists $2,900 for a first child's round trip.
- Financial aid exists but runs on its own deadlines. The Diocese of Arlington handles tuition assistance for its schools through one application process, and most independent schools publish their own aid timelines alongside admissions.
Tax-advantaged help. Virginia's 529 plan, now called Invest529, says K–12 tuition withdrawals are limited to $10,000 per student, rising to $20,000 for the 2026 tax year, and that Virginia taxpayers can deduct up to $4,000 per account per year with unlimited carryforward. Check the state tax treatment of K–12 withdrawals with a tax advisor before you rely on it. Separately, Virginia's Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits program funds private-school scholarships for students from families with incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty guidelines, or 400% for students with an individualized education program; the first step is to contact a participating school.
The public route is not entirely free either. FCPS charges a one-time fee when a family accepts an out-of-boundary immersion or magnet seat, and before- and after-school care through the county's School-Age Child Care program is fee-based.
Two Admissions Calendars, Side by Side
The single biggest mistake relocating parents make is assuming private schools enroll like public ones. They do not. Here is how the two calendars line up for a child starting school in fall 2027, using dates the schools and FCPS have published.
When | FCPS | Private and independent schools |
|---|---|---|
October 2026 | AAP referral for new FCPS students in grades 3 to 7 due 15 October; Thomas Jefferson applications open 5 October and close 30 October | Open houses begin; St. Paul VI holds one on 25 October |
November–December 2026 | Main AAP referral deadline 15 December for fall 2027 placement | BASIS McLean early round closes 15 November; St. Paul VI application due 14 December after its placement test; The Potomac School deadline 28 December |
January 2027 | Immersion lottery applications have opened in January (12 January in 2026); Thomas Jefferson essay assessment 9 January | Diocese of Arlington applications open 1 January; Oakcrest deadline 8 January; Flint Hill 13 January; Langley and Ideaventions 15 January; BASIS regular round 29 January; Dominion Christian 31 January |
February–March 2027 | Hunters Woods magnet lottery window has run late February to late March | The association of independent schools' common notification date is the last Friday in February, 26 February 2027; St. Paul VI notifies on 12 February |
April onward | AAP eligibility decisions for the main cycle in early April | Rolling admission where seats remain; Oak Hill Christian's deadline is 30 April |
Any time | Register at your base school once you have proof of residence | Year-round or rolling at some schools, including Fusion Academy and Fairfax Christian |
The independent-school dates come from each school's admissions page and the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington, which sets the late-February notification date for its members. The FCPS dates come from its AAP schedule, immersion page and magnet lottery page. The Catholic schools follow the Diocese of Arlington's admissions process, with a single online application for its preschool-to-grade-8 schools.
What this means for a family relocating in spring or summer: the main private-school round is likely to have closed, and a seat depends on mid-year openings or rolling admission. If private school is a serious option, contact schools in the fall before your move, even if your house search has not started.
Getting There: Buses, Shuttles and the Daily Drive
FCPS buses students to their base school. It does not run buses for private schools: its private school FAQ says FCPS provides transportation for private-school students only when it is needed for special education services under an individualized service plan, and never outside Fairfax County. FCPS also does not bus immersion students from outside the immersion school's own attendance area.
So for private school, the question is whether the school runs its own transportation to Reston. Several publish that they do:
- Nysmith School for the Gifted says its buses pick up and drop off every day through Great Falls, Vienna, Oakton, Reston, Herndon and other local areas.
- Flint Hill School lists bus routes that include Reston and Herndon.
- Oakcrest School lists a bus stop at the Reston Station Metro plaza.
- St. Paul VI Catholic High School lists a Reston stop at St. Thomas à Becket and a Herndon stop at St. Joseph.
- The Langley School says its routes typically cover McLean, Great Falls, Vienna and Reston.
- Fairfax Christian School lists bus service to areas including Reston, Herndon and Oak Hill.
Trinity Christian School and BASIS Independent McLean state that they do not offer transportation. For any school, drive the route at the hour you would actually make it: Reston's main links to the schools above run along the Dulles Toll Road, the Fairfax County Parkway, Reston Parkway and Route 7 toward Tysons, and the difference between a 7:30 a.m. and an 8:15 a.m. departure can be large.
Curriculum: AAP and IB Compared With Independent Models
Parents often frame this as "advanced public programs versus private school". In Reston the more useful comparison is between specific teaching models.
- FCPS full-time AAP. A differentiated Level IV curriculum for students found eligible through screening, delivered at a center or, at some schools, through a local full-time program. It sits inside the standard Virginia framework and the same school day.
- FCPS International Baccalaureate. In the South Lakes pyramid, Dogwood Elementary offers the Primary Years Programme, every Langston Hughes student follows the Middle Years Program, and South Lakes adds the Diploma and Career-related Programmes. That continuum is unusual for a public pyramid.
- FCPS Advanced Placement and dual enrollment. Herndon High's model is course by course, letting a student concentrate advanced work in their strongest subjects.
- Schools built for gifted learners. Nysmith, The Edlin School and Ideaventions Academy each build their whole program around advanced learners rather than running a separate track.
- Montessori. Reston Montessori School, an American Montessori Society full member, runs from infancy to age 14; Sunset Hills Montessori runs to grade 4. Mixed-age classrooms and self-directed work are the defining features.
- Classical and faith-based education. Dominion Christian and Oak Hill Christian describe a classical Christian model; the Catholic parish schools follow the Diocese of Arlington; Al Fatih Academy is an Islamic school.
- College-preparatory independent schools. Flint Hill, Oakcrest, Langley and BASIS Independent McLean each set their own curriculum and assessment; ask each how it handles Advanced Placement or its own advanced courses, and how its graduates' transcripts are read.
- One-to-one instruction. Fusion Academy Reston teaches each class with one student and one teacher, and enrolls year-round.
None of these is "better" in the abstract. The right question is which model fits how your child learns, and whether you are buying a whole school culture or one program inside a large school.
Hybrid Paths Reston Families Use
Few families choose once for thirteen years. These are the patterns worth planning around:
- Private preschool, then FCPS kindergarten. Reston's Montessori and preschool programs feed many families into their base FCPS elementary school at age five. Our guides to preschools for families moving to Reston and childcare and early learning in Reston cover those years.
- FCPS elementary, then private for the teen years. Oakcrest starts at grade 6 and St. Paul VI at grade 9. Note that FCPS middle school starts at grade 7, so a grade 6 move means leaving elementary school a year early.
- A private K–8, then FCPS high school. Many parish and independent schools end at grade 8, and their students then join South Lakes or Herndon High. In that case the base-school assignment you bought years earlier comes back into play.
- FCPS throughout, with a program switch. A child can enter an AAP center from grade 3, an immersion program at the start, or the IB Diploma in grade 11 without leaving the public system.
What Each Choice Does to Your Home Search
This is the part relocating parents tend to discover late, and it is where the school decision quietly becomes a financial one.
A public-school-first search is drawn on a map by FCPS. You can only consider homes whose address carries the assignment you want, so your pool is smaller and the other buyers in it want the same thing. In Reston, where the median home went under contract in 8 days over the past year, that means doing the boundary check before you tour, being fully underwritten before you see a house you like, and agreeing your offer terms in advance.
A private-school-first search is drawn by drive time. The base-school assignment matters less, so you can weigh layout, lot, condition and price per square foot more freely, and consider homes a boundary-led buyer would skip. The constraint moves from the boundary line to the morning route, or to a school's bus stops: a family planning on Oakcrest's bus, for example, might weigh homes near Reston Station differently from a family planning on Nysmith's.
An undecided family should still check the assignment. Children change, tuition plans change, and a future buyer of your home is likely to care about the assignment even if you never use it. Running every address through the Boundary Locator costs nothing and keeps both doors open.

Questions Worth Asking on Every School Tour
Whether you are visiting an FCPS school or a private campus, the same handful of questions separates a good fit from a good brochure.
- How do new students join mid-year? Ask how a child arriving in January or March is placed, paired with a buddy and assessed.
- What does a typical day look like for my child's grade? Start and end times, recess, homework and how time is split across subjects.
- How does the school stretch a child who is ahead, and support one who is behind? In FCPS, ask about Level IV services and the AAP center; in a private school, ask about differentiation and learning support, and whether it costs extra.
- What happens at the next transition? For a school that ends at grade 8, ask where students usually go next. For an FCPS elementary school, ask how students move into the middle school's programs.
- What does a year cost beyond tuition? Care, transport, meals, devices, trips and activity fees add up in both systems.
- How do families and teachers communicate? Ask for the real rhythm, not the policy.
Reston Market Snapshot
Metric | Reston, trailing 12 months |
|---|---|
Closed residential sales (20190, 20191, 20194) | 1,047 |
Median days on market | 8 |
Average days on market | 22.0 |
Median close-to-list price | 100.0% |
Average close-to-list price | 100.3% |
For a school-driven buyer the number to remember is the median of 8 days. The typical Reston home goes under contract in about a week and closes at its asking price, which leaves little time to research schools once a house appears. The average of 22.0 days shows that some listings sit much longer, which is worth knowing for a buyer whose school plan gives them a wider choice of homes.

Living in Reston While You Decide
Whichever route you choose, the daily life around it is the same Reston: village centers at Lake Anne, Hunters Woods, South Lakes, North Point and Tall Oaks; lakes including Lake Audubon, Lake Thoreau and Lake Newport; and the paths, pools and nature areas maintained by Reston Association, including the Walker Nature Center. Lake Fairfax Park is the big weekend outlet, the Reston Regional Library is the homework stop, and the Silver Line's Wiehle-Reston East and Reston Town Center stations put Tysons and Washington within rail reach for commuting parents. A public-school family and a private-school family can live on the same street here and have very different mornings, which is exactly why the school decision belongs before the house decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should we choose public or private school in Reston, VA?
It depends on your child, your budget and your timing rather than on a ranking. FCPS offers tuition-free schools assigned by address plus AAP centers, immersion and magnet lotteries, and IB and AP high school routes. Private schools in and near Reston offer gifted-focused, Montessori, faith-based and college-preparatory models, with published 2026–27 tuition from under $9,000 to more than $56,000.
What private schools are in Reston itself?
Schools operating inside Reston include the Academy of Christian Education, The Edlin School, Ideaventions Academy, Al Fatih Academy, Reston Montessori School, Sunset Hills Montessori and Fusion Academy Reston. Nysmith, St. Joseph Catholic School, Dominion Christian and Oak Hill Christian are close by in Herndon.
Is there a Catholic school in Reston?
Not a day school inside Reston. St. John Neumann parish runs a preschool and St. Thomas à Becket runs religious education. The nearest Catholic elementary schools are St. Joseph in Herndon and Saint Timothy and St. Veronica in Chantilly, and St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly runs a bus stop in Reston.
When do we need to apply to private schools?
Most deadlines for fall 2027 entry fall between mid-November 2026 and the end of January 2027, and many independent schools notify families on 26 February 2027. Some schools admit on a rolling basis after that. If private school is a real option, contact schools in the fall before your move.
Does FCPS provide buses to private schools?
No. FCPS transports private-school students only when needed for special education services under an individualized service plan, and not outside Fairfax County. Several private schools, including Nysmith, Flint Hill, Oakcrest, Langley, St. Paul VI and Fairfax Christian, publish their own bus service or stops in or near Reston.
Can we start in private school and switch to FCPS later?
Yes. A family living in Fairfax County can register at its base school once it has proof of residence. Programs such as AAP centers, immersion and Thomas Jefferson have their own entry points and deadlines, so plan the switch around those calendars.
What are the next steps?
Decide which route your child needs, mark the relevant deadlines, then shortlist homes either by FCPS assignment or by drive time to your chosen school. We can line up home tours to match on the same visit.
