The short answer: Reston's grocery map, area by area
Ask a Reston resident where they shop and the answer usually starts with where they live. Reston was planned around village centers, each originally built with a supermarket at its heart, and although that map has shifted over sixty years, most households here still have one store that is “theirs” because it is the closest — and then a second store they drive to for something specific.
This guide follows that habit. It is organised by part of Reston rather than by brand, so you can see what your weekly routine would look like from a given address. Every store below was checked as trading in early October 2026, with addresses and hours taken from the store's own page wherever the store publishes them.
Part of Reston | Nearest full supermarket | Also within a short drive |
|---|---|---|
North Reston (North Point) | Giant, 1450 North Point Village Center | Trader Joe's and the Spectrum stores |
Reston Town Center and the Spectrum | Whole Foods and Harris Teeter at the Spectrum; Trader Joe's off Baron Cameron Avenue | Wegmans at Halley Rise |
Halley Rise and the Reston Town Center Metro | Wegmans, 11950 Hopper Street | The Spectrum, across the Toll Road |
Reston Station and Wiehle Avenue | No full supermarket on the plaza | Wegmans one Metro stop west; the Spectrum by car |
Lake Anne and Tall Oaks | No supermarket in the village center | Saturday farmers market; Giant North Point; the Spectrum |
South Lakes | Safeway, 11120 South Lakes Drive | Safeway Hunters Woods; Harris Teeter at Woodland Park Crossing |
Hunters Woods | Safeway, 2304 Hunters Woods Plaza | Giant at Fox Mill; Safeway South Lakes |
West edge, toward Herndon | Lidl, 2110 Centreville Road, or Harris Teeter at Woodland Park Crossing | H Mart, Lotte Plaza, MOM's and Sprouts on Elden Street |
Why Reston shops by village center
Most suburbs grew their supermarkets along a highway strip. Reston did it differently: its founding plan grouped housing around a series of village centers — Lake Anne, Hunters Woods, Tall Oaks, South Lakes and North Point — and each was meant to give its surrounding neighborhoods a grocery store, a few shops and a place to meet, all within a walk or a short drive.
That design still shapes daily life, but not evenly. Three of the village centers still have a supermarket: North Point has a Giant, and South Lakes and Hunters Woods each have a Safeway. Two do not. Lake Anne, the original 1960s center, is now built around restaurants, small shops and a Saturday market, and Tall Oaks lost its Giant in 2007; by 2016 its new owner had ruled out bringing a grocery store back and redeveloped the site mostly as housing.
Meanwhile, the biggest stores moved to where the newer density is. The Spectrum shopping center beside Reston Town Center now holds two full supermarkets, with Trader Joe's a few minutes up the road, and Wegmans opened in 2023 at Halley Rise, south of the Dulles Toll Road. For a new resident, the practical result is that your nearest supermarket depends heavily on which side of Reston Parkway and the Toll Road you live on.
What changed recently — and why older lists are wrong
Reston's grocery map moved more in the last eighteen months than in the decade before it. If a guide or a map pin disagrees with this one, check the date:
- Whole Foods left Plaza America. The store that had operated on Plaza America Drive since 1996 closed on 3 August 2025 and reopened three days later in the former Best Buy building at the Spectrum, 1861 Fountain Drive — at 46,711 square feet, almost twice the size.
- A Lidl may fill the old space. In August 2026, FFXnow reported that the discount grocer had signed a lease for the former Whole Foods space at 11660 Plaza America Drive, according to the broker's updated site plan. Lidl has not announced an opening date, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
- Hunters Woods changed hands. The Safeway-anchored Hunters Woods Village Center was sold in January 2026 to the Pennsylvania investor J.C. Bar. The Safeway is still trading, with the same hours.
- There is no ALDI in Reston. Despite what some directory searches suggest, we could not find one inside Reston or Herndon. The nearest stores are further out in Loudoun and western Fairfax County; check ALDI's store locator for the closest to your address.
North Reston and North Point: Giant is the neighborhood store
For the northern neighborhoods in 20194, the default is Giant at 1450 North Point Village Center, the anchor of North Point Village Center in north Reston. It is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day and has a pharmacy inside, open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays with shorter weekend hours.
One detail that surprises newcomers: Giant's fuel station for this store is not in the village center. Giant lists it separately at 12219 Leesburg Pike in Herndon, so if you are used to filling up in the supermarket parking lot, plan a different stop.
North Point households are also only a few minutes from the Spectrum, so the common pattern is Giant for the everyday shop and a trip down Reston Parkway when Trader Joe's or Whole Foods is on the list.
Reston Town Center and the Spectrum: two supermarkets and a Trader Joe's
The Spectrum at Reston Town Center, on the north side of the Town Center along Reston Parkway, is the closest thing Reston has to a grocery district. Its directory now lists two full supermarkets a short walk apart, and a third store sits a few minutes north:
- Whole Foods Market, 1861 Fountain Drive — the relocated, larger store, open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with a specialty cheese counter, seafood and meat counters, a bakery and prepared foods.
- Harris Teeter, 11806 Spectrum Center — a full-service supermarket with a pharmacy and a wine section, and the most conventional weekly shop of the three. Harris Teeter's own store page has current hours and pickup options.
- Trader Joe's, 11958 Killingsworth Avenue, off Baron Cameron Avenue near Silver Diner — not in the Spectrum itself, but a few minutes north of it. Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and a store many Reston households use as a second stop rather than a first.
Because the three are so close together, many Town Center residents never commit to one. They go to whichever fits the list that day, treat Whole Foods and Harris Teeter as a single stop, and add Trader Joe's on the way home. If you are looking at a condominium or townhouse near the Town Center, this cluster is one of the strongest everyday-convenience arguments for the area.
Halley Rise and the Metro: Wegmans until midnight
South of the Dulles Toll Road, beside the Reston Town Center Metro station, the newer Halley Rise neighborhood has the largest grocery store in Reston. Wegmans at 11950 Hopper Street opened on 1 February 2023 as an 85,000-square-foot store, and it is open from 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.
At opening, Wegmans described a store with around 1,200 wines, a deep seafood department, a cheese shop and a restaurant-style prepared-food section with sushi, pizza, wings, soup and made-to-order salads. In practice it is where Reston goes for the big monthly shop and for anything late: it is one of only three supermarkets in Reston open until midnight.
For anyone living at Halley Rise itself, Wegmans is effectively the corner store. For everyone else south of the Toll Road it is the default big store, and for north Reston it is a ten-minute drive across Reston Parkway.
Reston Station and Wiehle Avenue: shopping by train or by car
The high-rise neighborhood around the Wiehle-Reston East Metro has plenty of restaurants on its plaza but no full-size supermarket. Residents there tend to choose one of three routines.
- By Metro. Wegmans sits beside the Reston Town Center station, one Silver Line stop west of Wiehle. For a car-free household, a weekly shop by train is genuinely workable.
- By car. The Spectrum stores are a short drive north via Wiehle Avenue or Reston Parkway.
- By delivery. The large chains here — Wegmans, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, Giant and Safeway — all offer pickup or delivery (Trader Joe's does not), and in the towers around Reston Station delivery is the most common answer of all.
Lake Anne and Tall Oaks: no supermarket, one very good Saturday
Lake Anne is Reston's most distinctive address and its least convenient for groceries. The village center has no supermarket, and neither does nearby Tall Oaks. Households here usually split their week between Giant at North Point and the Spectrum, both a few minutes' drive away.
What Lake Anne does have is the best farmers market in Reston on its doorstep. The Reston Farmers Market, run by the Fairfax County Park Authority, sets up in the Lake Anne Village Center parking lot at 1609 Washington Plaza North every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The 2026 season runs from 25 April to 21 November, so it continues for several more weeks after this guide publishes.
It is a producer-only market: vendors may sell only what they grow or make themselves, and they come from within 125 miles of Fairfax County. For a Lake Anne household, a Saturday walk to the market and a midweek supermarket run is the local rhythm from spring to late autumn. From late November to April, it is the supermarkets alone.
South Lakes and Hunters Woods: two Safeways open until midnight
South Reston is the part of town best served by late-opening village stores. Both of its village centers still have a supermarket, both are Safeway, and both are open from 6 a.m. to midnight every day:
- Safeway South Lakes, 11120 South Lakes Drive, in the South Lakes Village Center.
- Safeway Hunters Woods, 2304 Hunters Woods Plaza, with a pharmacy, in the village center next to Reston Community Center.
Safeway lists DriveUp & Go pickup and same-day delivery at both. For families in the South Lakes and Hunters Woods neighborhoods, the late hours matter more than they sound: forgotten lunch-box items at 10 p.m. are a two-minute drive rather than a trip to the Town Center.
South Reston residents also sit close to two stores just over the line in Herndon's 20171 ZIP code: the Harris Teeter at Woodland Park Crossing, 12960 Highland Crossing Drive, and Giant at Fox Mill Shopping Center, 2551 John Milton Drive, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Which of the four is “nearest” depends on exactly where in south Reston you live.
The international aisle: Elden Street and beyond
Reston's own supermarkets carry international sections, but for a full Korean, pan-Asian or South Asian shop, locals drive a few minutes west to Herndon, where the stores cluster along Elden Street.
- H Mart Herndon, 1228 Elden Street — the Korean-American supermarket chain, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Produce, seafood, prepared foods and a large Korean and pan-Asian grocery range; the closest H Mart to Reston.
- Lotte Plaza Market, 490 Elden Street — an Asian and international supermarket on the same stretch of Elden Street as MOM's Organic Market and Sprouts. Its current listing shows it open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
- Hello2India, 2320 Silver Arrow Way, Herndon — South Asian groceries, spices, fresh produce, halal meat, an in-house bakery and a food court, on the Oak Hill side of Herndon south-west of Reston.
Elden Street is also where the natural-foods stores are: MOM's Organic Market at 424 Elden and Sprouts at 494 Elden sit a few doors from Lotte Plaza, which is why so many west-Reston households make Elden Street a single weekly run. We cover those two in more depth in our guide to healthy and organic grocery options in Reston.
Discount shopping: Lidl now, and perhaps a second soon
For a lower-cost weekly shop, the nearest discount grocer is Lidl at 2110 Centreville Road in Herndon, a short drive from west Reston, with further Lidl stores in Sterling and Chantilly. If the Plaza America lease goes ahead, Reston would get its own Lidl at 11660 Plaza America Drive, just off Sunset Hills Road — the most significant addition to the town's grocery map since Wegmans.
Trader Joe's also functions as the budget option for many residents on staples, and the big chains all run loyalty programs with digital coupons. Our separate guide to the cost of groceries in Reston goes through the numbers.
Beyond Lake Anne: Herndon's Thursday market
The other farmers market Reston residents use is the Herndon Farmers Market, on the 700 block of Lynn Street by the Red Caboose in downtown Herndon. It runs on Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, from 7 May to the end of October in 2026 — useful for anyone whose Saturdays are taken, and for north and west Reston households who are closer to Herndon than to Lake Anne.
Who is open early, and who is open late
Hours are where Reston's stores differ most, and they matter more than people expect in the first months after a move. These are the hours each store publishes for itself:
Store | Area | Daily hours |
|---|---|---|
Wegmans | Halley Rise | 6 a.m. – midnight |
Safeway South Lakes | South Lakes | 6 a.m. – midnight |
Safeway Hunters Woods | Hunters Woods | 6 a.m. – midnight |
Giant | North Point | 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. |
Giant | Fox Mill (Herndon) | 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. |
H Mart | Elden Street (Herndon) | 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. |
Whole Foods Market | Spectrum | 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. |
Trader Joe's | Killingsworth Avenue | 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. |
The pattern is simple: if you shop before work or after 9 p.m., Wegmans and the two Safeways are your stores; if you shop on a Saturday morning, the farmers market and the Spectrum are where your neighbors will be.
Matching the grocery map to your home search
Nobody should choose a house for its supermarket, but the grocery map is a good proxy for how car-dependent a given address will feel, and it is worth a look before you tour.
- Walk to groceries: Halley Rise (Wegmans), the Spectrum edge of Reston Town Center, and parts of South Lakes and Hunters Woods close to their village centers.
- One short drive: North Reston, most of the Town Center area and most of south Reston.
- Plan around it: Lake Anne, Tall Oaks and Reston Station, where the nearest supermarket is a drive or a Metro ride — offset, at Lake Anne, by the Saturday market.
Schools, commute and budget will usually decide the search before groceries do. If schools are on your list, read our data-backed look at Reston's schools and confirm any specific address with the FCPS Boundary Locator, because boundaries change. The Reston neighborhood guide covers the rest, and if you are weighing the town next door, our Vienna grocery guide does the same exercise for Vienna.
Reston market snapshot

Average days on market | 22.0 |
Median sale-to-list price | 100.0% |
Average sale-to-list price | 100.3% |
With more than a thousand closings a year, Reston is a deep market, and a median of eight days on market means the best-positioned homes do not wait. The average of 22 days is the other half of the story: homes that miss on price or condition linger. Knowing in advance which village center you want to live near is one of the simplest ways to be ready when the right home appears.
