The Short Version: Reston's Music Follows the Calendar
Reston's live music is unusually generous and unusually seasonal. From mid-May to late September, free outdoor concerts run on five different nights of the week across Reston Town Center, Lake Anne, Halley Rise and Reston Station. From October to April, the music moves indoors, into a 260-seat community theater in Hunters Woods, a pub that books bands every weekend and a small cafe on the Lake Anne plaza.
The cocktail side of the evening runs the other way: it barely changes with the seasons. A hotel bar built around amaro and rare bourbon, a tiki bar open until 2 a.m. at weekends and a handful of dining rooms that treat the bar menu as seriously as the kitchen keep Reston's glasses full all year.
So the useful question is not "where is the music?" but "what month is it?" This guide is laid out that way: summer first, then the indoor season, then the cocktail bars, then a few ways to combine them. Every venue and series was checked against its own website or a current local report in October 2026.
Summer: A Free Concert Somewhere in Reston Five Nights a Week
The backbone of Reston's summer is two programs. Reston Community Center's Summer Concert & Entertainment Series runs from just before Memorial Day into late September, and Reston Concerts on the Town fills Saturday nights at the Town Center Pavilion. Together they gave Reston this weekly rhythm in 2026:
Night | Series | Where | 2026 season |
|---|---|---|---|
Wednesday | Sunset Concerts | Lake Anne Plaza | 24 June – 26 August, 7:30–9 p.m. |
Thursday | Take a Break Concert Series | Halley Rise, 2025 Fulton Place | 25 June – 27 August, 7:30–9 p.m. |
Friday (early) | Happy Hour with Darden & Friends | Reston Town Square Park | 22 May – 26 June, 5:30–6:45 p.m. |
Friday (late) | Summerbration Fab Fridays | Reston Station | 29 May – 25 September, 7:30–9 p.m. |
Saturday | Reston Concerts on the Town | Reston Town Center Pavilion | 16 May – 22 August, 7:30 p.m. |
Sunday | Sunday Art in the Park with Shenandoah Conservatory | Reston Town Square Park | 21 June – 30 August, 7–8 p.m. |
Every series on that table is free. The 2026 season is over by the time you read this; the 2027 dates are normally announced in spring, so treat the table as the pattern to expect rather than a promise of specific nights.
Saturday Nights at the Pavilion: Reston Concerts on the Town
The Saturday series is the one most people mean when they talk about summer in Reston. The 2026 run was its 33rd season, with fifteen free shows from 16 May to 22 August, opening alongside the Tephra ICA arts festival weekend and taking 4 July off. FFXnow published the full lineup in April: soft-rock cover band Yacht Lobsters opened, Reston-born alternative band RDGLDGRN played a hometown date in June, The Ocean Blue played in August and a Queen tribute closed the season. Most shows start at 7:30 p.m.
What makes it work as a night out rather than just a concert is Sip & Stroll. During the concerts, participating Town Center restaurants will sell you a drink in a clear plastic cup carrying their logo, and you can carry it within the event footprint. The rules are strict and worth reading once:
- Buy only from participating restaurants, and tell your server it is for Sip & Stroll.
- Keep the drink in the cup it came in; no glass or cans leave the restaurant.
- Drinks cannot leave the event footprint or go into the garages.
- Bringing your own alcohol is not allowed under Virginia ABC law, and coolers may be checked.
The series runs rain or shine unless storms are severe. Day-of cancellations are posted by the Reston Town Center Association and on its phone line at 703-435-6600, extension 2.
The Smaller Summer Stages: Lake Anne, Halley Rise and Reston Station
The weeknight series each have a distinct character, and if you live in Reston you will probably end up with a favorite.
Wednesdays at Lake Anne. The Sunset Concerts on Lake Anne Plaza are the most Reston thing on the list: a midweek band on the waterfront of the community's original 1960s village center, timed for golden hour and slightly cooler air. Bring a chair and get there early on a warm night.
Thursdays at Halley Rise. The Take a Break series completed its third summer in 2026 at Halley Rise, one of Reston's newest neighborhoods, in an open space with room to dance. The series is billed as a showcase for fresh talent rather than tribute bands.
Fridays, twice. Early on Friday evenings in late spring, vocalist and bandleader Darden Purcell curates Happy Hour with Darden & Friends, an after-work jazz set in Reston Town Square Park. Later the same night, Summerbration Fab Fridays turns the Reston Station plaza into a cover-band dance party. The start times were staggered in 2026 so you can do both.
Sundays in the park. Sunday Art in the Park brings rising classical musicians from Shenandoah Conservatory to Reston Town Square Park for an hour-long evening concert. It is the quiet end of the week and very good with children.
October to April: Where Reston's Music Moves Indoors
When the plazas go quiet, the most reliable stage in Reston is the Leila Gordon Theatre at Reston Community Center, a 260-seat room at 2310 Colts Neck Road in Hunters Woods. Its Professional Touring Artist Series mixes authors, theater and music, and the music dates on the 2026–27 calendar include:
- Yungchen Lhamo, 29 November, 3 p.m. — the Tibetan vocalist signed by Peter Gabriel to Real World Records, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.
- Sam Prather, "Funk of Our Fathers", 17 January 2027, 3 p.m. — a live history of Black music from West African rhythm to funk, hip-hop and neo-soul.
- Lúnasa, 20 February 2027, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. — the Irish traditional band.
RCC lists these at $15–$20, and $25–$35 for Lúnasa, with tickets sold through its myRCC system; new accounts can take up to 48 hours to activate, so set one up before the show you want sells out. At 260 seats, nobody is far from the stage.
Reston's own ensembles fill in the winter too. The Reston Chorale, founded in the fall of 1966 just two years after Reston itself, is in its 60th season and opens it with a holiday concert, "Threads of Joy," on Saturday 5 December, followed by its annual Messiah singalong in December. The Reston Community Orchestra performs a series of free concerts through the year.
Makers Union: A Band Every Friday and Saturday
If you want live music in a bar rather than a theater, Makers Union at 1811 Library Street in Reston Town Center is the year-round answer. It books live music every Friday and Saturday night, it is open to midnight on Friday and 2 a.m. on Saturday, and it was the artist hospitality sponsor for the 2026 Concerts on the Town series.
The rest of its week is built for regulars: a weekday happy hour it calls the People's Hour, from 3 to 6 p.m., and a martini menu every Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. The restaurant notes that Town Center garages are free on weekday evenings after 5 p.m. and all weekend, which matters when the band starts late.
Lake Anne Coffee House & Wine Bar: The Small Room on the Plaza
At the other end of the scale, Lake Anne Coffee House & Wine Bar at 1612 Washington Plaza North is a family-run cafe by day and a wine bar with a kitchen in the evening. It is open until 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with last call and the kitchen closing thirty minutes before, and it publishes a current live music schedule on its events page. The wine list ranges across Virginia, California, France and Italy, and the kitchen sources locally wherever it can.
It is not a late-night venue and it is not large. That is the appeal: live music in a small room, a glass of wine and the lake outside. The cafe recommends booking for dinner, and on music nights that advice is worth taking.
Cocktail Bars: Where the Drink Is the Reason to Go
Reston's cocktail scene is concentrated in hotel bars and in restaurants with ambitious bar programs rather than in standalone speakeasies. Six worth knowing:
Schar Bar at The Simon, Reston Station
Inside the JW Marriott at Reston Station, The Simon bills its bar as the region's only amaro-focused and rare-bourbon cocktail bar. The hotel says the Schar Bar program is built on a partnership with Smith Bowman Distillery, which it describes as the first post-Prohibition distillery on land that is now Reston, and that the room shifts in the evening to jazz and amaro cocktails. Published hours run from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. It sits steps from the Wiehle-Reston East Metro.
Tiki Thai
Tiki Thai at 12100 Sunset Hills Road, Suite 107, next to the Town Center, pairs Southern Thai cooking with a full tiki cocktail list. It keeps late hours for Reston: until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a happy hour every day from 3 to 6 p.m.
Clarity Reston
The second Clarity, at 1996 Opportunity Way in the new RTC Next section of the Town Center, is now open. The original has been on Maple Avenue in Vienna since 2015, and before opening the Reston team told FFXnow it planned about 175 indoor seats and a 40-seat patio under executive chef Danny Ahn. Expect handcrafted cocktails alongside an upscale New American menu; it is a natural choice at the Town Center for a dinner that starts at the bar.
Seven
Seven at Reston Town Center is built around a central bar and lounge seating by a glass-encased fireplace, which makes it a good cold-weather choice for a cocktail. Dinner runs until 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Masti
Masti, at 1825 Discovery Street, opened in October 2025 as an upscale Indian restaurant and bar. At opening its drinks list carried more than three dozen wines and more than 100 spirits, with house-made syrups behind the cocktails. It also takes part in Sip & Stroll during the summer concerts.
Lantern House Kitchen & Bar
At Reston Station, Lantern House Kitchen & Bar at 11207 Reston Station Boulevard is the Tran family's Vietnamese and Asian-fusion restaurant, a follow-on to their Falls Church bistro, with a bar that suits a pre-Metro drink.
Three Reston Evenings That Work
Put the calendar and the bars together and a few reliable evenings fall out of it.
- A summer Saturday at the Town Center. Early dinner and a cocktail at Clarity or Seven, then walk to the Pavilion for the 7:30 p.m. Concerts on the Town set with a Sip & Stroll cup. Afterwards, Makers Union has its own band until late.
- A winter Saturday at Hunters Woods and Lake Anne. Lúnasa's 3 p.m. matinee at the Leila Gordon Theatre on 20 February, then a short drive north for dinner and wine at Lake Anne Coffee House, which is open until 9 p.m. on Saturdays (but only until 3 p.m. on Sundays, so a Sunday show needs a different plan).
- A Friday by the Metro. A drink at Schar Bar after work, Summerbration on the Reston Station plaza in season, and the Silver Line home if you are heading east.
Bigger Stages Within a Short Drive
Reston's own venues are community-scale. For a national touring act, residents look east along the Toll Road. Capital One Hall in Tysons programs concerts, comedy and touring theater year-round, and Wolf Trap in Vienna runs an outdoor summer season at the Filene Center and a smaller indoor season at The Barns. Both are an easy drive from most Reston addresses, which is part of why Reston's own scene can stay relaxed and local.
Living Near the Music: Which Part of Reston to Look At
If evenings like these are part of why you are considering Reston, the location of the stages should shape the search.
- Reston Town Center puts the Pavilion, Town Square Park, Makers Union and most of the cocktail bars in this guide within walking distance. Housing here is mostly condominiums, apartments and newer townhomes.
- Reston Station puts Schar Bar, Lantern House and the Summerbration plaza at your door, with Wiehle-Reston East for the commute.
- Lake Anne is where the Wednesday concerts and the cafe's music nights happen, among mid-century townhouses and condominiums around the lake.
- Halley Rise, south of the Toll Road by the Reston Town Center Metro station, is one of the newest neighborhoods and hosts the Thursday series.
- Hunters Woods in south Reston is home to Reston Community Center and the Leila Gordon Theatre, with the Town Center a short drive away.

Reston Market Snapshot
Reston's housing market moves quickly, which is worth knowing before you fall for a particular part of town. Bright MLS shows 1,047 closed residential sales across ZIP codes 20190, 20191 and 20194 between 9 September 2025 and 9 September 2026.
Measure | Reston (20190 / 20191 / 20194) |
|---|---|
Closed sales | 1,047 |
Median days on market | 8 |
Mean days on market | 22.0 |
Median close-to-list ratio | 100.0% |
Mean close-to-list ratio | 100.3% |
Half of Reston's closed sales spent eight days or fewer on the market. The typical sale closed at exactly its list price, while the higher mean days on market shows that homes priced or presented poorly can sit. For a buyer, that argues for knowing your preferred area before the search starts. Spending a few evenings at the venues above is a pleasant way to do that homework.
