The short answer: where live music actually happens in Vienna
Vienna is a small town with a real music habit. It is not a nightlife district and it does not pretend to be one, but on any given week there is a stage inside a 200-capacity room on Maple Avenue, a brewpub calendar by the trail, a British pub with a gin list, and — from June to mid-August — a free concert on the Town Green. Ten minutes west, Wolf Trap puts national touring acts on an outdoor stage in a national park.
If you are relocating and want to know whether Vienna has an evening, the honest answer is that it has a programmed evening. You check a calendar, you book, you go. That is different from a city where you wander out and find something. For most buyers moving from DC or Arlington, this is the adjustment worth understanding before you choose a street.
- Jammin' Java — 227 Maple Ave E. The room that makes Vienna a music town.
- Hawk & Griffin — 435 Maple Ave W. British pub, deep gin list, late for Vienna.
- Caboose Tavern — beside the W&OD Trail, with a published events calendar.
- Bear Branch Tavern — the one room in town that genuinely runs to 2 a.m.
- Clarity and Evelyn Rose — where the cocktail is the point, not the soundtrack.
- Wolf Trap — the Filene Center and The Barns, minutes from most Vienna addresses.
Jammin' Java: the room that makes Vienna a music town
Almost every serious answer to "where is the live music in Vienna" starts at 227 Maple Avenue East. Jammin' Java is a small, low-ceilinged club that books local, regional and nationally touring acts, and it is now programmed by Union Stage Presents — the same team behind Union Stage on the DC waterfront. That is why the calendar runs deep and why the booking quality is better than a town of 16,000 has any business supporting.
It is not only a local favourite. Northern Virginia Magazine's Jammin Java listing treats it as one of the region's defining entertainment venues, and the magazine's May 2026 round-up of Northern Virginia bars and restaurants with live music is a useful cross-check if you want to see how the wider Fairfax County and Falls Church scene compares.
Practical notes that matter more than a review: it is a seated-and-standing room depending on the show, it has a bar, and shows are usually early enough that you are home before midnight. Buy from the venue's own calendar rather than a resale site.
One link warning. The venue's old domain, jamminjava.com, currently serves a broken security certificate and browsers will block it. That is a certificate problem, not a closed business — the club is open. Use the Union Stage listing above.
Hawk & Griffin: the gin list, the happy hour, and the parking trap
Hawk & Griffin at 435 Maple Avenue West is the closest thing Vienna has to a proper British pub, and its drinks identity is genuinely gin-forward rather than decorative. It is also one of the few rooms in town open to 11 p.m. midweek.
- Hours: Monday 11 a.m.–9 p.m., closed Tuesday, Wednesday to Friday 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–11 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
- Happy hour: Monday to Friday, 3–6 p.m.
- Parking: free in the pub's own lot, entered from Maple Avenue westbound or from Nutley Street through the Wawa lot. The pub warns that cars left in the Village Green Center or Wawa lots are towed immediately. Read that twice before a Friday visit.
The Tuesday closure catches people out constantly, and the menu page is the place to confirm before you drive.
Caboose Tavern: trailside, and the calendar is the point
Caboose Tavern sits directly beside the W&OD Trail, which is why it functions as Vienna's default meeting point: cyclists at 4 p.m., families at 6, and a different crowd later. It brews its own beer and runs a published events calendar — trivia, run clubs, seasonal releases and music nights. Check that page rather than assuming; the schedule genuinely changes week to week.
For a relocating buyer, Caboose is the single best argument for the streets immediately north and east of the Town Green. Being able to walk to it is a real amenity, not a brochure line.
Bear Branch Tavern: the late room
If your definition of a night out involves being somewhere after 11 p.m., Bear Branch Tavern is the answer and very nearly the only one. Set back from Maple Avenue in an unassuming building, it runs to 2 a.m. and programmes live music on weekend nights. It is also the room most likely to have a dollar-oyster deal running, which tells you something about the kind of place it is.
Its site sits behind a bot-protection screen that sometimes shows a "checking your browser" page; that is normal and the venue is open.
Where the cocktail is the point
Two Vienna dining rooms treat the bar programme as a discipline rather than an accessory.
Clarity at 442 Maple Avenue East is the town's fine-dining anchor, open to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It has expanded to a second location at Reston Town Center, which is a reasonable signal of health for a suburban restaurant in 2026.
Evelyn Rose, at 111 Church Street NW, opened in June 2024 in the space that Bazin's on Church occupied for eighteen years before closing in April 2024. If you are reading an older Vienna guide, that is the correction to make: Bazin's is gone, and Evelyn Rose is the seasonal New American restaurant on that corner now.
For something less formal, Maple Ave Restaurant is a long-standing small room worth a booking — though it closes early, so it is a dinner, not a late night. Vienna Thai & Bar and Inca Social both carry a fuller bar and a later, louder energy than most of Maple Avenue.
Wolf Trap: the reason summer evenings look different here
Wolf Trap is the amenity that genuinely separates Vienna from its neighbours. The Filene Center is an open-air amphitheatre inside Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts — the only national park in the country dedicated to the performing arts — and it programmes a full summer season of touring music. The Barns at Wolf Trap runs a smaller indoor season through the colder months, so the venue is not purely seasonal.
What buyers underestimate: on a Filene Center night, traffic on Trap Road and the roads feeding it changes materially for an hour before and after. If you are house-hunting in the streets closest to the park, visit once on a show night before you commit. Most people find it a fair trade; a few do not, and it is better to know.
Free, outdoors, and genuinely local
The Town of Vienna runs Summer on the Green — free concerts on select Fridays at 6:30 p.m. from June through mid-August, on the Town Green at 144 Maple Avenue East. It is the most accurate picture of the town you will get: folding chairs, children, dogs, and a band that is usually better than free.
Chillin' on Church closes Church Street to traffic on scheduled evenings and turns the historic block into a street party. Between those two series and the trail, Vienna's civic programming does more for its evening life than its bar count suggests. The Vienna Business Association and Visit Fairfax both keep event listings current, and FFXnow is the local outlet that actually reports openings and closures.
Ten minutes out: where the room stays open
When Vienna closes, Tysons is the overflow, and it is close enough to count as part of the lifestyle you are buying.
- Barrel & Bushel in the Hyatt Regency at Tysons Corner — twenty-plus rotating local taps, open late seven days.
- Shipgarten — a shipping-container beer garden with outdoor screens and regular live music.
- Starr Hill Biergarten — brewery taproom in the Boro district.
- Capital One Hall — a full performing-arts hall with touring theatre and music, plus The Perch, the rooftop park above it.
- CIRCA at The Boro, Founding Farmers Tysons and Wren for a later cocktail with a kitchen still open.
Getting home afterwards
The Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro Station sits at the eastern edge of town on the Orange Line, which makes a night in DC or Arlington a train ride rather than a parking problem. It is genuinely on the edge, though: most of the addresses people think of as "Vienna" are a bus, a bike or a short drive from the platform, not a walk. Fairfax Connector covers the gap on weekdays, thinner at night.
For Maple Avenue itself, the practical answer is that Vienna is a walking town within about a half-mile of the Town Green and a driving town outside it. That half-mile is exactly what the premium is paying for.
Which Vienna streets put you inside walking distance
If evening walkability is the priority, the search narrows fast. The blocks around Church Street NW and the Vienna Town Green put Jammin' Java, Evelyn Rose, Caboose and the concert lawn within a stroll. Windover Heights, the streets off Mill Street NE, and the older in-town grid north of Maple hold that walkability with period houses and small lots.
Vienna Woods is larger, leafier and mostly a short drive rather than a walk. Maple Avenue West towards Nutley puts you nearest Hawk & Griffin and closest to I-66. Beulah Road runs north-east towards the larger lots. Each of these trades differently between lot size, school walk zone and evening access — see the Vienna neighbourhood guide for how they compare on price.
The other thing the walkable core buys you
Evening walkability and school walk zones overlap in Vienna more than people expect, and buyers almost always ask about both in the same conversation. The in-town grid feeds Louise Archer Elementary, Cunningham Park Elementary and Marshall Road Elementary; the western and northern edges feed Flint Hill Elementary and Wolftrap Elementary. Most of the town runs on to Thoreau Middle School and James Madison High School. Boundaries move, so confirm any address against Fairfax County Public Schools' own locator rather than a listing sheet.
Daytime, the same streets reach Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and the trail within a few minutes, and Caffè Amouri on Church Street is the morning counterweight to everything above. A house that works at 8 p.m. and at 8 a.m. is the one that holds its value in a town this size.
Vienna market snapshot
Figures below are Bright MLS closed residential sales in ZIP codes 22180, 22181 and 22182 for the twelve months to 9 September 2026.
Metric | Vienna (22180 / 22181 / 22182) |
|---|---|
Closed sales, 12 months | 757 |
Median days on market | 7 |
Mean days on market | 23.9 |
Median close-to-list price | 100.0% |
Mean close-to-list price | 101.0% |
A seven-day median with a twenty-four-day mean is the signature of a split market: well-priced houses in the walkable core go almost immediately, while a meaningful tail sits for a month or more. Close-to-list at exactly 100% means the typical house sells for its asking price — not a market where lowball offers land, and not one where every property draws an escalation.
What this means if you are relocating
Buyers moving from a city usually discover the same two things about Vienna. First, the evening is real but scheduled — you will use calendars more than you used to. Second, the half-mile around the Town Green behaves like a different market from the rest of town, because walkability is the scarce thing here.
If that walkable core is what you want, you should expect to move quickly when something lists and you should have your financing settled before you tour — Virginia Housing is the first place to check if a first-time-buyer programme might apply to you. If you would rather have the lot and drive four minutes, your options widen considerably and the competition eases. Both are good outcomes. They are just different searches, and deciding which one you are running is the single most useful thing you can do early.

Frequently asked questions
Does Vienna, VA actually have live music?
Yes. Jammin' Java on Maple Avenue East books touring and regional acts throughout the year under Union Stage Presents, Bear Branch Tavern programmes weekend music, Caboose Tavern runs a published events calendar, and the Town of Vienna puts on free Summer on the Green concerts on select Fridays from June to mid-August.
Is Bazin's on Church still open?
No. Bazin's on Church closed in April 2024 after eighteen years. Evelyn Rose has occupied 111 Church Street NW since June 2024. Older guides still recommend Bazin's, which is the most common out-of-date entry in Vienna restaurant lists.
What is open latest in Vienna?
Bear Branch Tavern, which runs to 2 a.m. Hawk & Griffin holds until 11 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday. Most of Maple Avenue stops seating between 8 and 9 p.m., so a late night in Vienna means one of those two rooms or a ten-minute drive to Tysons.
Which night should I avoid if I am heading to Hawk & Griffin?
Tuesday — the pub is closed. It is also worth knowing that parking at the neighbouring Village Green Center or Wawa lots results in immediate towing; use the pub's own lot.
How close is Wolf Trap to a typical Vienna house?
Minutes. The Filene Center sits just west of town inside Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. The trade-off is show-night traffic on the roads nearest the park, which is worth experiencing once before you buy on one of them.
Can I get home from DC by Metro after a night out?
Yes, to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station on the Orange Line, but check the last-train time for your night — and remember that the station is at the edge of town, so most Vienna addresses still need a car, bike or bus from there.
Is the walkable part of Vienna worth the premium?
That depends on how you actually spend an evening. If you would use the Town Green concerts, the trail and Church Street most weeks, the half-mile core earns its price and resells accordingly. If your evenings are mostly at home or in Tysons, you can buy more house four minutes away for less.
