The top supermarkets near Vienna, VA, at a glance
When you move to a new town, the first grocery store you use tends to become the one you use for years — usually because it was nearest on day one, not because it suits your week. This guide is meant to stop that happening in Vienna. It compares the supermarkets that matter within about fifteen minutes of the town on the things a new resident actually has to decide: hours, pharmacy and fuel, price against quality, online ordering, and which Metro station each one sits beside.
Every store below was checked against its own store page or a current listing in October 2026. The six names most new residents hear first — Giant, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter at Dunn Loring, Trader Joe's at Tyson's Station, Wegmans Tysons and Safeway on Nutley Street — are all trading today. We have added the two discount chains, an international market, and two closures you will still see referenced in older guides.
- Best all-round in-town store: Giant Food, 359 Maple Avenue East — open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., pharmacy in store.
- Premium and organic in town: Whole Foods Market Vienna, 143 Maple Avenue East.
- Best for an Orange Line commute: Harris Teeter at 2675 Avenir Place, by Dunn Loring-Merrifield.
- Latest hours: Safeway on Nutley Street and Wegmans Tysons, both open until midnight.
- Lowest prices: Lidl at 8387 Leesburg Pike and ALDI on Lee Highway in Fairfax.
- Specialty value: Trader Joe's at Tyson's Station, 7514 Leesburg Pike.
The comparison table
One table, so you can see the trade-offs side by side rather than store by store. Hours are the stores' own published hours unless noted.
Supermarket | Address | Hours (daily) | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|
Giant Food | 359 Maple Avenue East, Vienna | 6 a.m.–11 p.m. | In town; pharmacy; Giant gas station at 252 Maple Avenue West; pickup and delivery |
Whole Foods Market | 143 Maple Avenue East, Vienna | 8 a.m.–9 p.m. | In town; organic and prepared food; delivery and pickup for Amazon Prime members |
Harris Teeter | 2675 Avenir Place (Dunn Loring side) | Listed 6 a.m.–11 p.m. | Beside the Dunn Loring-Merrifield station; pharmacy; strongest quality scores of the big three conventional chains |
Safeway | 3043 Nutley Street, Fairfax | 6 a.m.–midnight | Near the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station; pharmacy; fuel station; pickup and delivery |
Wegmans | 1835 Capital One Drive South, Tysons | 6 a.m.–midnight | Big-store range and prepared food; Meals 2GO; top-rated for quality in the regional survey |
Trader Joe's | 7514 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church | 8 a.m.–9 p.m. | Own-brand specialty range; no online ordering, pickup or delivery |
Lidl | 8387 Leesburg Pike, Vienna 22182 | 8 a.m.–9 p.m. | Discount own-brand format; Lidl Plus app; near the Greensboro Silver Line station |
ALDI | 11001 Lee Highway, Fairfax | 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m. | Lowest prices in the regional survey; curbside pickup and delivery; bring a quarter for the cart |
Harris Teeter's own store pages block automated checks, so its hours come from current listings — confirm before a late run.
How we compared them
Rankings on grocery stores are usually somebody's opinion. We have tried to stick to things that can be checked.
- Hours, address and services come from each chain's own store page, read in October 2026.
- Price and quality come from the Consumers' Checkbook Washington-area supermarket survey, published in November 2025: a 150-item price check across the region's chains, and a survey of Checkbook's own members on quality.
- Location is described by road and Metro station, not by minutes, because Vienna's drive times change completely between 8 a.m. on Route 123 and 8 p.m.
What we have not done is rank the stores against each other overall. A family of five and a single commuter need different supermarkets, and the honest answer to “which is best” is “for what?”
Who is open when you get home
For a lot of relocating households, hours decide the default store more than anything else. Vienna's in-town options close earlier than people expect.
- Until midnight: Safeway on Nutley Street and Wegmans Tysons. If you land at Dulles on an evening flight and need milk on the way home, these are the two.
- Until 11 p.m.: Giant on Maple Avenue East, and Harris Teeter at Avenir Place by its listed hours.
- Until 9 p.m.: Whole Foods Vienna, Trader Joe's and Lidl.
- Until 8:30 p.m.: ALDI in Fairfax — the cheapest store on the list is also the earliest to close, which is why most people treat it as a weekend stock-up.
At the other end of the day, Giant, Harris Teeter, Safeway and Wegmans all open at 6 a.m., which matters more than it sounds if you have a school-run household and a 7 a.m. realisation that there is nothing for lunches.
Pharmacy, fuel and the one-stop question
New residents usually need a pharmacy transfer in the first couple of weeks, and it is worth putting it somewhere you already shop.
- Giant Vienna has a pharmacy in store. Its gas station is not at the store, though — it is a separate site across town at 252 Maple Avenue West, which surprises people who assume the fuel points and the pumps come as a pair.
- Safeway on Nutley Street has a pharmacy and a fuel station, and the longest store hours of the group.
- Harris Teeter at Avenir Place has a pharmacy, and its fuel points can be redeemed at participating BP and Amoco stations as well as Harris Teeter fuel centres.
If the goal is one stop for groceries, prescriptions and gas on the same visit, Safeway on Nutley Street is the closest fit. If it is the shortest drive from central Vienna, Giant wins, with the gas station as a second stop.
Price against quality: what the regional survey found
Checkbook's survey is the most useful independent comparison for this region, and its two halves — price and quality — point in different directions often enough to be interesting.
- Wegmans was rated “superior” overall by 87% of its surveyed customers, and its prices were about 10% below Giant, Harris Teeter and Safeway. That combination is unusual, and it is why so many Vienna households make the Tysons trip.
- Harris Teeter charged about the same as Giant and Safeway, but 60% of its customers rated it superior for overall quality, with far higher scores than either rival on produce, meat and staff.
- Trader Joe's was rated superior by 76% of its customers, with prices about 5% below the Giant, Harris Teeter and Safeway average.
- ALDI and Lidl were the cheapest, at 36% and 21% below the all-store average — on a modified basket, because both sell mostly their own brands in limited sizes.
- Whole Foods was the most expensive of the large chains surveyed, about 14% above the all-store average.
- Safeway was rated superior overall by 29% of its surveyed customers, among the lowest of the large chains.
Read those as what Checkbook's members reported, not as a verdict on a particular store; one branch can be better or worse than its chain. Checkbook also does the arithmetic on why the price gaps matter: for a family spending $300 a week, a 15% difference is worth $2,340 a year.
Ordering online, picking up, or having it delivered
For new arrivals still learning the roads, online ordering is often the first month's survival strategy. It is not available everywhere.
- Giant, Safeway and Wegmans all list grocery pickup and delivery on their Vienna-area store pages. Wegmans adds Meals 2GO for prepared food.
- Whole Foods handles delivery and pickup through Amazon, for Prime members only.
- ALDI offers curbside pickup and delivery from the Fairfax store.
- Trader Joe's does not sell online and does not offer curbside pickup or delivery. If it is part of your routine, it is an in-person trip.
The trade-off is the same everywhere: delivery and service fees, and less control over substitutions. Most households use it while unpacking and drift back to in-store shopping once they know their way around.
Match the supermarket to your Metro station
Vienna has four Metro stations within a short drive, on two lines, and the most practical way to pick a weekday store is to choose the one on your way home.
- Vienna/Fairfax-GMU (Orange Line) — Safeway is down Nutley Street at Lee Highway. Commuters from Cedar Lane and the townhouse communities off Nutley Street have the latest-opening store in the area on their route.
- Dunn Loring-Merrifield (Orange Line) — Harris Teeter sits in the Avenir Place development beside the station, and the Mosaic District is a short hop further. The natural choice for Dunn Loring Woods and the Westbriar side of town.
- Greensboro (Silver Line) — Lidl is on Leesburg Pike a short distance from the station, and Trader Joe's at Tyson's Station is further east on the same road.
- McLean (Silver Line) — Wegmans is part of Capital One Center, beside the Capital One headquarters. For anyone working there, or at Freddie Mac nearby, it quietly becomes the main store.
If you drive rather than ride, the same logic holds on the Wolf Trap side and around Spring Hill: Route 7 and Route 123 already run past Wegmans and Lidl, so a weekday top-up costs no extra miles.
What has changed nearby since 2025
Two closures are worth knowing, because older guides and map apps still reference them.
- Harris Teeter in Tysons closed. The store at 8200 Crestwood Heights Drive, at Park Crest, closed on 20 July 2025. The Dunn Loring store at Avenir Place is the nearest Harris Teeter to Vienna now.
- The Fresh Market in Vienna closed. Its Danor Plaza store closed on 31 May 2026, leaving Whole Foods as the only specialty grocer inside the town. No replacement tenant has been announced.
One more that predates both: there is no Safeway inside Vienna any more. The old Maple Avenue East store is a Walgreens, so Nutley Street is the nearest. Our guide to where Vienna locals shop has the fuller story of how the in-town options narrowed.
International, organic and specialty shopping
None of the mainstream chains above will fully cover a Korean, South Asian or Latin American pantry, or a strictly organic one. For those:
- International: H Mart's Fairfax store is at 11200 Fairfax Boulevard, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. by its listings, with a food hall inside. Northern Virginia's other big international markets cluster in Fairfax, Annandale, Falls Church and Centreville rather than in Vienna itself.
- Organic: MOM's Organic Market at 8298 Glass Alley in Merrifield is the nearest dedicated organic grocer, and a second Whole Foods — the Tysons Corner store — is at 1635 Boro Place in The Boro. Our healthy and organic shopping guide covers these alongside the farm stand and CSA options.
- Seasonal and local: the Saturday farmers market at the Vienna Community Center runs from May to October.
Your first week in Vienna: a supermarket checklist
- Pick your weekday store by your commute, using the Metro list above, not by which store is nearest the house.
- Pick a stock-up store — usually Wegmans, Lidl or ALDI — and put a recurring weekend slot in the calendar.
- Join the loyalty programmes at the stores you will actually use. Giant, Harris Teeter and Safeway all price lower for members, and it costs nothing.
- Transfer prescriptions once, to a pharmacy at a store you already visit: Giant on Maple Avenue East, Safeway on Nutley Street or Harris Teeter at Avenir Place.
- Test the late run. Before you need it, drive to whichever of Safeway or Wegmans is your midnight option, so you know the route and the parking.
- Bring your own bags. Fairfax County charges five cents per disposable plastic bag at grocery stores, inside the Town of Vienna too.
- Visit the Saturday market between May and October. It is the quickest way to get a feel for who your neighbours are.
How the supermarket map relates to where you buy
Vienna is compact enough that no part of town is far from a good supermarket, so groceries should be a tiebreaker rather than a deciding factor. Where it does matter is daily friction: central Vienna, Windover Heights, Vienna Woods and the Church Street blocks have Giant and Whole Foods minutes away on Maple Avenue; East Vienna and the Dunn Loring side lean toward Harris Teeter; the Wolf Trap and Flint Hill side leans toward Tysons.
School boundaries do not follow the grocery map. Families comparing Vienna Elementary, Louise Archer Elementary, Westbriar Elementary, Wolftrap Elementary, Thoreau Middle, Kilmer Middle and James Madison High School should check each address on the FCPS boundary locator. And the weekend anchors — Nottoway Park, the W&OD Trail and Meadowlark Botanical Gardens — are spread across town, so most addresses are near at least one.
When you are ready to compare specific blocks, our Vienna homes for sale page shows what is currently available, and the Vienna neighbourhood guide covers the rest of daily life. If you are weighing Vienna against McLean, we wrote the equivalent supermarket guide for McLean.
Vienna market snapshot
For new residents who have not bought yet, here is how quickly homes have been moving. Bright MLS closed residential sales in ZIP codes 22180, 22181 and 22182 for the twelve months to 9 September 2026.
Metric | Vienna, VA (22180 / 22181 / 22182) |
|---|---|
Closed sales in the period | 757 |
Median days on market | 7 |
Average days on market | 23.9 |
Median sale-to-list price | 100.0% |
Average sale-to-list price | 101.0% |
Seven days is the median, so if you are renting first and buying later, the homes you like will rarely wait for a second weekend. The longer average shows there is room to negotiate on the rest.
