Where to Get the Best American Food in Fairfax, VA

Where to Get the Best American Food in Fairfax, VA

Quick Answer: Where Fairfax Eats American Food Right Now

Fairfax does not have one restaurant row. It has five small clusters spread across the City of Fairfax and the surrounding Fairfax mailing area, and each one does American food differently. So this guide is laid out like a map. Pick the part of town you are curious about, or the part you are thinking of living in, and you will find the places worth knowing there. Every restaurant below was checked as open in late October 2026, using the restaurant's own site, the City of Fairfax's business profiles or dated local news, which we link to.

  • Old Town Fairfax: Hamrock's Restaurant for creative American cooking in an 1842 brick house, and Kelly's Oyster House & Bar, its sister restaurant a short walk away.
  • Fairfax Boulevard: Artie's, a Fairfax City fixture since 1978, and P.J. Skidoos, the family-run tavern that opened the same year.
  • Fairfax Corner: Ruthie's All-Day, the area's newest serious American kitchen, opened this spring with wood-smoked barbecue and Southern sides.
  • Fair Lakes and Fair Oaks: Chutzpah Deli for a New York deli sandwich and Silver Diner when you want breakfast at dinner time.
  • Route 50 west: MISSION BBQ for brisket and pulled pork on the way home.

If you want the steakhouse and comfort-food angles in more depth, we have already covered them in Best Steakhouses in Fairfax, VA for Date Night and Top Comfort Food Spots in Fairfax, VA Locals Love. This guide is the wider view: what "American food" looks like across Fairfax as a whole, and where each style lives.

First, Which Fairfax? City, County and the Mailing Address

The word "Fairfax" covers three different things, and it matters for both dinner plans and house hunting.

  • The City of Fairfax is an independent city of about six square miles, with its own government, its own police and its own business office. Old Town Fairfax, Fairfax Boulevard and the area around George Mason University's main campus sit in or right next to it. The city's site is fairfaxva.gov.
  • Fairfax County is the much larger county that surrounds the city. Fairfax Corner, Fair Lakes and Fair Oaks are in the county, not the city, even though their addresses say "Fairfax."
  • The Fairfax mailing address covers ZIP codes such as 22030, 22031, 22032 and 22033, which reach well past the city line.

Why does this matter at the dinner table? Because the city's restaurants are mostly small, older and independent, clustered around a historic downtown, while the county side runs to newer town centers with big dining rooms and parking decks. Both are "Fairfax," and both are within a short drive of each other, but they feel very different on a Tuesday night. When you look at homes, the same split shows up in taxes, services and school assignments, which is why we always check the exact jurisdiction of an address with our clients rather than going by the mailing label.

Old Town Fairfax: Historic Houses, Oysters and Two Taprooms

Old Town is the walkable heart of the City of Fairfax, a grid of brick buildings around the courthouse and Main Street. It is the best part of Fairfax to eat American food on foot, because five very different places sit within a few blocks of each other.

Hamrock's Restaurant

Hamrock's sits in the Moore-McCandlish House, a brick house built in 1842 at the corner of Chain Bridge Road and Main Street. Chef-owner Bill Hamrock runs it as an independent neighborhood restaurant with a creative American menu, indoor and outdoor seating and weekend brunch. The City of Fairfax's profile of Hamrock's is a good introduction to the place and the family behind it. If you are new to Fairfax and want one dinner that tells you what Old Town is about, this is it.

Kelly's Oyster House & Bar

Bill Hamrock opened Kelly's in spring 2024 at 4069 Chain Bridge Road, in the space that used to be Capital Ale House, as Patch reported at the time. The restaurant says it always carries at least six kinds of oysters, from Virginia to Canada and the West Coast, with a shucker at the oyster bar in the evenings. Around the oysters is a casual, family-friendly American menu and a full bar. Kelly's own about page tells the story.

Commonwealth Brewing Co.

The Virginia Beach brewery opened its second location at 10426 Main Street in fall 2023, after more than a year of renovation. It is a big indoor-outdoor space for Old Town, roughly 8,000 square feet with seating for about 265 people, and the kitchen is built around wood-fired pizza alongside the beer. Commonwealth's Fairfax page lists Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company

On Willard Way, a block off Main Street, Chubby Squirrel calls itself Fairfax City's first brewery and has been brewing on site since 2018. It pairs its small-batch beer with a full kitchen, which makes it a relaxed choice for burgers and pub plates with a group.

The Auld Shebeen and Patriot's Pub & Grill

The Auld Shebeen, at 3971 Chain Bridge Road, has been Old Town's Irish pub since 2005. It is not strictly American food, but its two floors, live music and hearty plates such as shepherd's pie and Guinness beef stew make it part of most Old Town evenings. A few blocks east, Patriot's Pub & Grill at 10560 Main Street has served wings, burgers and pizza on house-made dough since 1996. It is owned by a group of women who are George Mason alumnae, which explains the name.

One more Old Town name you will hear is Draper's Steak & Seafood on Blenheim Boulevard. It is a steakhouse first, so we leave it to our steakhouse guide.

Fairfax Boulevard: The Old Guard and the Quick Stops

Fairfax Boulevard, the old Lee Highway, is the city's main commercial road. It is not pretty, and you will drive rather than walk it, but it holds two of the longest-running American restaurants in Northern Virginia and a handful of good quick stops.

Artie's

Artie's, at 3260 Blenheim Boulevard near Fairfax Circle, has been a Fairfax City favorite since 1978. It is part of the local Great American Restaurants group and is designed like a New England boathouse, inspired by Lake Winnipesaukee and old Chris-Craft boats. The menu is classic American seafood and steaks, and the restaurant lists its warm Ozzie rolls and hot fudge sundae among its signatures. It opens daily from late morning.

P.J. Skidoos

P.J. Skidoos opened in February 1978 at 9908 Fairfax Boulevard and is still family owned. It is known for prime rib, it has a patio and bar in the warmer months, and there is a private banquet room downstairs that hosts a lot of Fairfax birthday and retirement parties. The City of Fairfax business profile describes it as "Cheers before there was a Cheers," which is about right.

Big Buns and Ned's New England Deck

For a quicker meal, Big Buns has a Fairfax location at 10392 Fairfax Boulevard in the Point 50 shopping center, and it took part in the winter 2026 Fairfax City Restaurant Week. Further along at 10655 Fairfax Boulevard, Ned's New England Deck is a counter-service clam shack: lobster rolls on buttered buns, fried clams and roast beef sandwiches, with New England beers to match.

Layered

Just off the boulevard at 3924 Blenheim Boulevard, Layered opened in July 2025 in the old McDonald's building in Courthouse Plaza. It comes from the team behind Chateau de Chantilly and is a café rather than a diner, with pastries, cakes and sandwiches and lines that form at its pastry drop times. It is the most talked-about breakfast stop in the city right now.

Fairfax Corner: The Newest Plate in Town

Fairfax Corner is an outdoor town center in Fairfax County, south of Route 29 near the Fairfax County Parkway. It has three American restaurants close together on Grand Commons Avenue, which makes it an easy place to try several over a few weekends.

Ruthie's All-Day

Ruthie's is the biggest American food arrival in Fairfax this year. Chef Matt Hill's Arlington restaurant announced its Fairfax Corner location back in 2024, as FFXnow reported, and after a delay it opened in spring 2026 at 11951 Grand Commons Avenue. The cooking is a modern take on the Southern meat-and-three: wood-smoked barbecue and brisket, buttermilk biscuits and a long list of sides. Ruthie's Fairfax page shows counter-service breakfast on weekday mornings, full-service lunch and dinner, and weekend brunch. Fairfax Corner's store directory lists it too.

Coastal Flats

Coastal Flats at 11901 Grand Commons Avenue is another Great American Restaurants dining room. Its menu runs along the East Coast, from Maine to the Carolina low country, with seafood, steaks and pasta. It is a busy, reliable choice for a family dinner or a meal with visiting relatives, and Fairfax Corner's directory has its details.

Ozzie's Good Eats

Across the street at 11880 Grand Commons Avenue, Ozzie's Good Eats is named for Chris "Ozzie" Osborn, the group's longtime head of food. It leans Italian, but the menu is full of American classics such as braised short ribs and wood-grilled steak, served in a dining room with a lively bar and patio.

Fair Lakes and Fair Oaks: Diners, Delis and Big Dining Rooms

West of the city, the Fair Lakes and Fair Oaks area is Fairfax's big-box and office district, centered on Fair Oaks Mall and the shopping centers along Fair Lakes Parkway. The American food here is built for convenience: early breakfasts, quick lunches near the office parks and large dining rooms for groups.

Chutzpah Deli

Chutzpah, at 12214 Fairfax Towne Center, calls itself a real New York deli, and it is the place to go for piled-high pastrami and corned beef, matzo ball soup and deli platters for a crowd. Its site lists hours from early morning on weekdays and Saturdays, with shorter Sunday hours.

Silver Diner and First Watch

The Silver Diner in Fair Lakes, at Fair Lakes Parkway and West Ox Road, is open from early morning until late, which makes it the area's go-to for pancakes at 9 p.m. or burgers after a game. For a daytime breakfast, First Watch has two Fairfax locations, one at 9600 Main Street near Fair City Mall and one at 12249 Fair Lakes Promenade Drive. First Watch's Fairfax page lists daily hours from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar

Lazy Dog, at 11963 Fair Oaks Shopping Center, is a large, family-friendly American restaurant with a long menu of burgers, bowls and comfort plates. It is useful to know if you need a table for ten on short notice.

Route 50 and the Western Edge: Where the Barbecue Is

Fairfax has fewer barbecue pits than you might expect. Ruthie's at Fairfax Corner now covers smoked meats inside the area. Beyond that, the barbecue is on the western edge, along Route 50 and just over the line in Chantilly.

  • MISSION BBQ has a location at 13067 Route 50, Suite J, which carries a Fairfax 22033 address even though the chain calls it its Chantilly store. The location page has the menu and hours. The chain was founded on September 11, 2011, to honor the military and first responders, and the restaurant's décor reflects that.
  • Willard's Real Pit BBQ, at 4300 Chantilly Shopping Center in Chantilly, is the local independent pit. Willard's site has ordering and the menu.

If barbecue is high on your list, Fair Lakes, Greenbriar and the neighborhoods off Route 50 put both within a short drive.

Since 1978: Fairfax's Old Guard and Its Newcomers

One thing that stands out about American food in Fairfax is how long some of these restaurants have lasted. Two of them have been open for nearly half a century. That kind of staying power usually means a loyal local crowd, which is a good sign about a neighborhood.

What Closed or Changed in 2026

Restaurant lists go out of date fast, so here is what has changed around Fairfax this year. If you read an older guide, it may still list some of these.

  • Ornery Beer Company's Fairfax City taproom on University Drive closed on July 26, 2026. Its Herndon brewpub and Bristow taproom are still open, according to Northern Virginia Magazine's September closures roundup.
  • Glory Days Grill in Merrifield, on Nutley Street, did not reopen after a 2025 kitchen fire. The closure became permanent in February 2026 after 24 years, as Northern Virginia Magazine reported.
  • Mamma Lucia at Fair City Mall served its last slice on May 3, 2026, after nearly 39 years.
  • Banditos Bar & Kitchen near George Mason closed on March 17, 2026, according to FFXnow.
  • Matchbox in the Mosaic District closed over the summer. The space is being renovated for Makers Union, a pub from the same restaurant group.

None of the restaurants recommended in this guide is on that list. We will keep checking, because Fairfax's restaurant map is still changing.

Restaurant Week and the Old Town Calendar

The easiest way to sample a lot of Fairfax restaurants in a short time is Fairfax City Restaurant Week, which now runs twice a year, in late winter and late summer. Participating restaurants offer set-price lunch, brunch and dinner menus, and the winter 2026 list included Hamrock's, Kelly's, Commonwealth Brewing, Big Buns, P.J. Skidoos, Patriot's and The Auld Shebeen among more than 20 places. FFXnow covered the summer edition, and the official Restaurant Week site posts each season's list.

The Old Town Fairfax Business Association keeps a directory of downtown restaurants and runs or sponsors many of the events that bring people into Old Town on weekends. If you are new to the area, its calendar is a good way to learn the rhythm of downtown.

What Fairfax's Dinner Map Tells You When You House-Hunt

Restaurants are not a reason to buy a house on their own, but where they cluster says a lot about how daily life works in each part of Fairfax. Here is what we point out to clients who are comparing areas.

  • Walking to dinner. Old Town is the only part of Fairfax where you can walk between several sit-down American restaurants. Homes within a few blocks of Main Street and Chain Bridge Road get that benefit. Fairfax Corner is walkable once you are there, but most people drive in.
  • Getting around without a car. The City of Fairfax runs its own CUE bus, which links the city and George Mason with the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station on the Orange Line. Details are on WMATA's site for Metro and on the city's site for CUE.
  • Living near a university. George Mason University's main campus sits on the city's southern edge. It brings concerts, sports and a steady lunch crowd to nearby restaurants, and more traffic on game and event days.
  • Convenience versus character. Fair Lakes and Fair Oaks have the most choice of breakfast spots, chains and big dining rooms, and they sit close to Route 50, I-66 and the Fairfax County Parkway. Old Town and Fairfax Boulevard have more of the long-running independent places.

Every buyer weighs these differently, and there is no "best" part of Fairfax. What matters is which daily routine fits your household. When you are ready to look at what is on the market, you can browse homes for sale in Fairfax or read our Fairfax neighborhood guide.
