The short answer: Reston after 8 p.m., hour by hour
Reston is not a city that stays up all night, but it is a better late-evening town than its reputation suggests — as long as you know which hour you are planning for. Kitchens, dessert counters, the cinema and the last Silver Line trains all run on different clocks, and a good night out here is mostly a matter of putting them in the right order.
This guide is laid out the way the evening actually unfolds, in time blocks. Every business below was checked against its own website or a current local report in early October 2026, and the hours quoted are the ones the business publishes. Here is the one-screen version:
Time | What is realistic | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
8–10 p.m. | A full dinner without rushing the kitchen | Pisco y Nazca, Ted's Bulletin, Founding Farmers at Reston Station, Passionfish's bar menu |
8–10 p.m. | Dessert as its own outing | Pitango Gelato, Ice Cream Jubilee, MidnighTreats |
8–11 p.m. | Something to do that is not a bar | LOOK Dine-In Cinemas, CitySwing golf simulators, Topgolf Loudoun |
10 p.m.–midnight | A late plate or a booth | Barcelona Reston, Seven, Silver Diner, MidnighTreats |
After midnight | Mostly Fridays and Saturdays | Barcelona and Tiki Thai to 2 a.m. at weekends, Kalypso's at Lake Anne, Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon |
Going home | Plan the last leg first | Silver Line from Reston Town Center or Wiehle-Reston East; free Town Center garages |
Bars and live music are separate evenings with their own guides. This one is about the whole night: where to eat late, what to do between dinner and bed, and how to get home.
How late Reston actually stays up
The honest picture first. Reston was planned around village centers rather than a downtown, and most of those centers — Hunters Woods, South Lakes, North Point, Lake Anne — are neighborhood places that wind down early on a weeknight. The late evening is concentrated in two clusters: Reston Town Center, which has the cinema, the dessert shops and most of the late kitchens, and Reston Station around the Wiehle-Reston East Metro, which has a smaller run of restaurants on its plaza.
Three rules hold almost everywhere:
- Sunday to Thursday, think 10 p.m. Most dinner kitchens take last orders between 9 and 10 p.m. on weeknights. The places that stay open later are the exceptions, and they are listed below.
- Friday and Saturday add roughly an hour, and a handful of places run to 1 or 2 a.m.
- The kitchen closes before the room does. Several restaurants stop serving food well before they turn the lights off, so if you want to eat, arrive at least an hour before the posted closing time.
If you are new to the area, the practical takeaway is that a late Reston evening is planned, not stumbled into. The good news is that the planning is easy, because almost everything worth doing after 9 p.m. sits within a few blocks of the Town Center garages.
8 to 10 p.m.: a late dinner that doesn't feel rushed
These are the kitchens that still feel unhurried at 8:30 on a weeknight, with published closing times late enough that you are not the last table being watched.
Pisco y Nazca, 1871 Explorer Street
Pisco y Nazca is a Peruvian gastrobar at Reston Town Center, which makes it a good choice when a group wants to share ceviches and small plates rather than commit to three courses each. It is open until 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it takes reservations.
Ted's Bulletin, 11948 Market Street
Ted's Bulletin serves an all-day menu, so breakfast for dinner at 9 p.m. is a real option alongside burgers, steaks and cocktails. It closes at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it is one of the few places on the Market Street strip where a family with older children fits as comfortably as a couple.
Founding Farmers, Reston Station
Founding Farmers at 1904 Reston Metro Plaza is the dinner anchor for anyone arriving by train, a short walk from the Wiehle-Reston East platform. Lunch and dinner run to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. on Monday and Sunday, and dessert is served throughout. It is a sensible meeting point when friends are coming out from the District on the Silver Line.
Passionfish, 11960 Democracy Drive
If you want seafood after the dinner rush, Passionfish publishes a bar menu that runs until 10:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to its Reston Town Center listing. It is the more polished end of the late-dinner list and works well for a first evening out with visiting family.
A note on what closes early: several popular Town Center restaurants list 9 p.m. or 9:30 p.m. closing times on weeknights. If a particular kitchen matters to you, check its hours on the day rather than assuming the Town Center keeps a single schedule.
8 to 10 p.m.: dessert as its own outing
Dessert is where Reston quietly over-delivers. Three shops sit within a short walk of each other at the Town Center, and between them they cover gelato, scooped ice cream and a cookie counter that is open until midnight every day.
- Pitango Gelato at 11942 Democracy Drive makes Italian-style gelato and sorbet with organic milk and imported ingredients. Its current listing shows it open until 10 p.m. most nights and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it doubles as a coffee bar.
- Ice Cream Jubilee at 11990 Market Street is the regional scoop shop known for handcrafted, unusual flavors that rotate through the year — the sort of place where the limited-time board is the reason to go.
- MidnighTreats moved from Plaza America to 1826 Discovery Street at the Town Center in May 2026. It bakes oversized, plant-based cookies and adds milk teas, cookie pies and “cookie nachos”, and it is open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily — the latest-closing dessert counter in Reston.
A Ben & Jerry's scoop shop on Market Street rounds out the cluster. On a mild evening, the easiest dessert plan in Reston is to buy something at one of these and walk the fountain and Pavilion area while it is still lit.
Movies, golf simulators and other things to do that aren't a bar
The question relocating families ask most often is not “where are the bars” but “what do people actually do here at night?” Here is the realistic list.
LOOK Dine-In Cinemas, 11940 Market Street
The Town Center cinema is now LOOK Dine-In Cinemas, where you order food and drinks to your seat, so a late film can replace dinner rather than follow it. Evening showtimes run into the 9-to-10 p.m. range; on the day we checked, the last films started at about 9:50 p.m. Book ahead on Friday and Saturday nights.
CitySwing, 1805 Discovery Street
CitySwing is an indoor golf studio with simulator bays in the old Williams-Sonoma space across from North Italia. It publishes hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, so it is a Friday or Saturday evening activity rather than a weeknight one. Walk-ins are welcome, and it runs a weekday happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m.
Topgolf Loudoun, Ashburn
For the full-size version, Topgolf Loudoun is a drive west along the Dulles corridor. Its published hours run to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, midnight on Friday and Sunday and 1 a.m. on Saturday. Families should note its age policy: anyone under 18 must be supervised by a guest aged 21 or over after 9 p.m.
Bowling: a short drive out
There is no bowling alley inside Reston. The nearest lanes are Lucky Strike in Sterling, whose current listing shows it open until midnight on Friday and Saturday, and Bowl America Fairfax, now run by the same company as Bowlero. Both have arcades and late-evening specials, which the operator publishes on each location page.
Comedy and touring shows
Reston has no dedicated comedy club. For stand-up, concerts and touring theater, residents look east to Capital One Hall in Tysons, which programs year-round and is an easy run along the Toll Road or a few stops on the Silver Line.
From November: the Pavilion ice rink
Winter changes the Town Center's evenings. The outdoor Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion is scheduled to reopen on 6 November 2026 and run through 14 March 2027, weather permitting. Advance tickets are recommended, and session times are posted on the rink's page — a skate followed by a late dessert is one of the most reliable winter evenings in Reston.
10 p.m. to midnight: where the evening keeps going
By 10 p.m. on a weeknight the options narrow, but they do not disappear. These are the places that publish closing times of 11 p.m. or later and still serve food.
- Barcelona Reston, 12023 Town Square Street — tapas and wood-grilled plates, open until 11 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, midnight on Wednesday, 1 a.m. on Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The most useful late kitchen in Reston for a group that wants to graze.
- Seven at the Town Center — dinner until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday, with lounge seating around a glass-encased fireplace that makes it a good cold-weather choice.
- Silver Diner, 11951 Killingsworth Avenue off Baron Cameron Avenue — open until 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Breakfast all day, burgers and shakes, free parking and the easiest late booth in north Reston.
- bartaco at the Town Center lists its kitchen hours as 11 a.m. to “late” daily; treat that as a good bet before 11 p.m. and call ahead after.
Two practical notes for this hour. MidnighTreats is still open until midnight, so dessert is never off the table. And if the late plan is really a late errand, the Wegmans at Halley Rise is open until midnight seven days a week, with a prepared-food section that covers a lot of late-night hunger.
After midnight: the short list
Reston after midnight is mostly a Friday and Saturday proposition. Based on their own published hours, these are the places with a kitchen or a room still open:
- Barcelona Reston — until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, 1 a.m. on Thursday.
- Tiki Thai, 12100 Sunset Hills Road — Southern Thai cooking with tiki drinks, open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
- Kalypso's Sports Tavern on the Lake Anne waterfront — a Greek and Italian kitchen with a sports-bar room, listed until 1 a.m. Sunday to Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The rare weeknight option after midnight.
- Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, 697 Spring Street in downtown Herndon — open until 2 a.m. every day, a few minutes from north and west Reston.
One correction to older guides: we could not confirm any 24-hour sit-down restaurant in Reston. Amphora's Diner Deluxe on Elden Street in Herndon was long known as the area's round-the-clock diner, but its current listings show it closing at midnight on most nights and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Check before you drive over at 3 a.m.
Getting home: the Silver Line's real last trains
Reston has two Silver Line stations, and their late-night schedules are the single most useful thing to know before a night out. Reston Town Center station sits on the Dulles Toll Road at Reston Parkway, south of the Town Center itself; Wiehle-Reston East sits at Reston Station, steps from Founding Farmers and the plaza restaurants. WMATA's current station schedules show these last trains:
Night | Last train toward DC (Largo) from Reston Town Center | Same, from Wiehle-Reston East | Last westbound train arriving at Reston Town Center |
|---|---|---|---|
Monday–Thursday | 11:25 p.m. | 11:27 p.m. | 12:56 a.m. |
Friday | 1:25 a.m. | 1:27 a.m. | 2:56 a.m. |
Saturday | 1:24 a.m. | 1:26 a.m. | 2:56 a.m. |
Sunday | 11:25 p.m. | 11:27 p.m. | 12:52 a.m. |
Two things follow. First, on a weeknight a guest heading back toward Tysons or the District needs to be on the platform by about 11:20 p.m.; trains toward New Carrollton finish roughly ten minutes earlier still. Second, a Reston resident who spends the evening in the city has much more slack coming home, because the last westbound trains reach Reston close to 1 a.m. on weeknights and close to 3 a.m. at weekends. Schedules change, and weekend track work is common, so check WMATA on the day.
If you drive, the Town Center garages are free from 5 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day at weekends, while Market Street's meters still charge. Fairfax Connector buses link both stations to the surrounding neighborhoods, but evening service is thinner than daytime, so read the route timetable before relying on a late bus. Rideshare trips inside Reston are short.
Three Reston evenings, planned hour by hour
A Tuesday with friends coming out on the Metro. They arrive at Wiehle-Reston East around 7:45 p.m. and walk to Founding Farmers for an 8 p.m. table. At about 9:30, a short drive or rideshare to the Town Center for gelato at Pitango before it closes at 10. Back to Wiehle in time for the 11:27 p.m. train toward the District — the one deadline in the evening that does not move.
A Friday date night at the Town Center. Park free in a garage after 5 p.m. Book an 8 p.m. simulator bay at CitySwing, which runs until 10 on Fridays, then walk to Barcelona for a late tapas dinner — it is open until 2 a.m. — or catch a 9:50 p.m. film at LOOK and finish with a MidnighTreats cookie before the counter closes at midnight.
A Saturday with teenagers. An early-evening dinner at Silver Diner, then out to Topgolf Loudoun for a 9 p.m. bay, remembering that under-18s need a supervising adult aged 21 or over after 9. Home by 11. From November, swap Topgolf for an evening skate at the Pavilion rink and a late dinner at Ted's Bulletin, open until 11 on Saturdays.
What closed or changed recently
Reston's evening map has moved faster than most online lists. If a guide still recommends any of these, it was written before the change:
- True Food Kitchen at Reston Town Center closed in early October 2026.
- Not Your Average Joe's at the Spectrum closed on 15 July 2026 after a decade.
- Matchbox at Reston Station closed at the end of 2025.
- MidnighTreats has moved from Plaza America to the Town Center, which is why older maps show it in the wrong place.
- Coming, not yet confirmed open: Ebbitt House, the first offshoot of DC's Old Ebbitt Grill, was aiming for an October opening at 1860 Reston Row Plaza, and a Dogfish Head Alehouse is close to opening on Inspiration Street at the Town Center. Both would add late-evening options; check that they are open before you plan around them.
Which part of Reston you'll be closest to after dark
For anyone deciding where to buy, the evening map is a useful second layer on top of commute and schools. Reston's areas differ a great deal in how much of the above is a walk away.
- Reston Town Center — condominiums, apartments and newer townhomes within walking distance of the cinema, the dessert shops and nearly every late kitchen in this guide. The closest thing in Reston to walking home after a film.
- Reston Station and the Wiehle Avenue corridor — high-rise living over the Metro, with Founding Farmers and the plaza restaurants downstairs and the Town Center a short drive away.
- Halley Rise — one of Reston's newest neighborhoods, south of the Toll Road by the Reston Town Center station, with Wegmans open until midnight on site.
- Lake Anne — mid-century townhouses and condominiums around Reston's original village center, where Kalypso's is the late-night exception on a quiet waterfront.
- North Reston (20194) — family neighborhoods around North Point, with Silver Diner and the Spectrum a few minutes away and Herndon's late spots just west.
- South Reston, Hunters Woods and South Lakes — the quietest after dark and the most trail-and-lake oriented, with the Town Center a short drive north.
If schools are part of the decision, start with our data-backed look at Reston's schools, then confirm the specific address with the FCPS Boundary Locator; boundaries change, and the locator is the authoritative source. The typical home sold at its asking price. For a buyer, the useful conclusion is to know which part of Reston you want before the right listing appears — and spending a few evenings in each area is a pleasant way to find out.
