Personal Training & CrossFit in Vienna, VA

Personal Training & CrossFit in Vienna, VA

Strength training is one of the habits that survives a move worst. The gym you used for years had a coach who knew your shoulder, a class time that fit your commute and a price you stopped thinking about. In a new town all three have to be rebuilt at once, usually in the same month you are also choosing a school, a pediatrician and a route to work.

This guide is for people training seriously, or wanting to start, who are moving to or already living in Vienna, Virginia. It is organised by the way you want to be coached — a CrossFit class, a trainer to yourself, or a small group with a coach watching — and it ends with how to vet a trainer before you hand over a card. Every business named here was checked in October 2026, and the prices quoted are the ones each business publishes, nothing estimated.

The short version

  • CrossFit in town: The Mill (CrossFit Mill Street) at 434 Mill Street NE — adult classes from 5 a.m. plus kids, tweens and teens programmes.
  • CrossFit on the Tysons side: CrossFit Route 7 at 8504-B Tyco Road, a short walk from the Spring Hill Silver Line station, with Olympic weightlifting and HYROX training.
  • CrossFit toward Merrifield: CrossFit Fairfax at 2831 Dorr Avenue, convenient to Dunn Loring and the Mosaic District.
  • One-on-one, rehab-minded: Advanced Fitness & Sports Performance on Maple Avenue East, which pairs personal training with physical therapy.
  • One-on-one, flexible location: On The Way Fitness on Church Street NE — in the studio, at your house or by video.
  • Small-group strength: Oakton Strength Systems in Hunter Mill Plaza, F45 Training Vienna on Maple Avenue West, and StarFit Studio Vienna for women's small-group training.
  • The public option: county personal trainers at Oakmont Rec Center in Oakton, the facility most long-time residents still call Oak Marr.

Three ways to be coached, three ways to pay

Before comparing gyms, decide which of three models you are actually shopping for, because the price logic is completely different and the comparison only makes sense within a model.

CrossFit and coached class memberships are priced by the month and by how often you come. You get a coach and a programme, but you share the coach with the class. One-on-one personal training is priced by the session or in packs, and you are paying for a person's full attention and for a plan written around you. Semi-private or small-group training sits between them: a handful of people on individual programmes, one coach circulating. It costs far less per session than private training and gives you more correction than a big class.

Here is what Vienna-area providers publish today, so you can see the spread for yourself.

Model

Published example

What the price buys

CrossFit membership

The Mill: $170 a month for three sessions a week, $220 a month unlimited

Coached group classes, plus open gym on the unlimited plan

CrossFit on-ramp

The Mill Foundations: $265

Four sessions with a CrossFit Level 1 instructor and six follow-ups

Private training, independent studio

On The Way Fitness: $55–$70 an hour depending on package

55-minute one-on-one sessions; 30-minute sessions also offered

Private training, premium studio

Oakton Strength Systems: from $120 a session

One-on-one coaching inside a structured strength system

Semi-private small group

Oakton Strength Systems: from $15 a session

An individual programme in a coached small group

Private training, public facility

Fairfax County Rec Centers: $80 for 60 minutes, $50 for 30

A county trainer, with discounts on 6- and 12-session packs

Two things stand out. Private training in this area ranges by more than double depending on the studio, so “how much is a trainer in Vienna” has no single answer. And the cheapest coached option per session is semi-private training, not a big-box gym with a trainer bolted on.

CrossFit in and around Vienna

CrossFit gyms are licensed affiliates, and the affiliate directory at CrossFit.com is the quickest way to confirm a gym is current. Three are within easy reach of Vienna, and they suit different households.

The Mill — the in-town box with a youth pipeline

CrossFit Mill Street, which trades as The Mill, sits at 434 Mill Street NE, a block off Maple Avenue and close to the W&OD Trail. Weekday classes run from 5 a.m. to the 7 p.m. slot, which is what makes it work for people catching an early train from the Vienna Metro station or doing school drop-off afterwards.

What sets it apart is the family structure. Alongside the adult CrossFit sessions (branded Mill Street Training) and a lower-barrier conditioning class called Mill Street Burn, it runs CrossFit Kids, Tweens and Teens programmes, with 10-session packs for ages 9–12 and 11–15. A parent and a teenager can train in the same building in the same hour. The published price list also includes a one-week pass at $80, useful if you are in town house-hunting and want to keep training.

CrossFit Route 7 — the Tysons commuter's box

CrossFit Route 7 is at 8504-B Tyco Road in the Tysons part of the 22182 ZIP code, and it describes itself as one block from the Spring Hill Metro station on the Silver Line. That location is the whole point: if you work in Tysons, you can train before or after work without going home first.

Its programming goes beyond the standard class. It lists CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, personal training, nutrition coaching and a beginners' Foundations course, and it trains members for HYROX, the indoor fitness race that combines running with functional stations. Rates are released after you fill in a short enquiry form rather than posted openly, so ask for them before your free trial class.

CrossFit Fairfax — the Merrifield option

CrossFit Fairfax at 2831 Dorr Avenue is technically a Fairfax address, but it sits in the Merrifield business district a few minutes from the Dunn Loring edge of Vienna and the Mosaic District. It offers group CrossFit, one-on-one private training and HYROX classes. For households on the Orange Line side of town it can be closer than either of the others.

One caution on directories: older listings still show CrossFit Merrifield on Prosperity Avenue, which Yelp now marks as closed. Confirm any gym you find on a third-party list against its own website before you plan around it.

One-on-one training on Maple Avenue and Church Street

Private training is the right choice if you have a specific problem to solve: an old injury, a sport, a medical condition your doctor wants you to train around, or simply a history of starting programmes and not keeping them. Two in-town studios approach it differently.

Advanced Fitness & Sports Performance

Advanced Fitness & Sports Performance occupies Suite 202 at 527 Maple Avenue East, in the same building as Karen's Florist and VHC Health. It frames its work around longevity: strength, mobility and injury prevention rather than intensity for its own sake. New clients start with a free intro in which a coach talks through training history, looks at how you move and explains the plan before any workout.

The distinctive part is the clinical side. The studio now offers physical therapy and soft-tissue work under the same roof, which means the hand-off from rehab to training does not involve a new building or a new professional who has never seen you. A Patch profile describes the owner, Anis Khachnaoui, as a certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist with a degree in exercise science.

On The Way Fitness

On The Way Fitness has trained clients in Vienna since 2009 from 501 Church Street NE, a few minutes from Maple Avenue with free parking. Its model is flexibility. You can train in the studio, have a trainer come to your house within reasonable distance of Vienna, or train live by video — useful during the weeks when you are between houses or travelling back and forth for a move.

It is also one of the few studios here that publishes its rates: $55 to $70 an hour for in-studio packages depending on commitment, with 55-minute sessions and shorter 30-minute options. House calls are priced separately. If you have a trainer in mind they will honour the request; if not, they match you on goals.

Small-group strength: the middle option

If you want real coaching but not a private-training bill, small-group or semi-private training is where to look. Three providers cover different needs.

Oakton Strength Systems is at 2940 Hunter Mill Road, Suite 101, in Hunter Mill Plaza near the Chain Bridge Road intersection — five minutes from the western side of Vienna. Every new member does a Foundations on-ramp in which a trainer assesses movement and teaches the main compound lifts, and then chooses private, semi-private or hybrid training. It publishes private sessions from $120 and semi-private sessions from $15, with 5, 10 and 15 percent discounts for three-, six- and twelve-month commitments and a 10 percent discount for teachers and veterans. It states that every trainer holds a nationally recognised certification or an exercise-science degree and completes an internal certification before coaching. There is no on-site childcare, but sessions run morning, afternoon and evening.

F45 Training Vienna on Maple Avenue West runs short, team-style functional workouts in which the studio's own description promises group training with the attention of a certified personal trainer. It suits people who want structure and energy more than a lifting programme.

StarFit Studio Vienna is a women's studio built around small-group and personal training with a strength-based programme, part of a small locally owned group that also has studios in Arlington and Alexandria.

The public option most newcomers miss

The Fairfax County Park Authority employs personal trainers at its Rec Centers, and the published county rates are lower than most private studios. The closest centre to Vienna is Oakmont Rec Center at 3200 Jermantown Road in Oakton. It was called Oak Marr until November 2023, when the Park Authority board renamed the park, rec center and golf center — which is why you will hear both names.

The county's personal-training page lists the current rates:

The fitness centre at Oakmont has Cybex strength machines, free weights and drop-in group fitness classes included with a county membership pass, plus a pool. For households on the Tysons side, Spring Hill Rec Center is the other nearby centre with a fitness director listed on the county's training page. It is not a boutique experience, but the partner rate in particular is hard to beat if two of you want to start together.

How to vet a trainer: the credential check

Virginia licenses physical therapists but not personal trainers, so the certification is the main filter you have. Three things are worth checking.

Is the certification accredited? The benchmark in the United States is accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The widely recognised personal-trainer certifications — NASM, ACE and ACSM — and the NSCA's CSCS for strength and conditioning specialists are the long-established names to look for on a trainer's bio.

Can you verify it? The United States Registry of Exercise Professionals lets consumers look up whether a trainer holds a current NCCA-accredited certification. It takes two minutes and is the simplest way to check a name a studio gives you.

Does the credential match the job? A CrossFit Level 1 certificate is a two-day course and is the requirement to coach at an affiliate. It is a perfectly good qualification for leading a class; it is not the same thing as a strength-and-conditioning credential or clinical training. If you are coming back from surgery, look for a coach working alongside a physical therapist, or a studio that has one on staff, as Advanced Fitness does.

How to vet a trainer: the first session and the first month

A credential tells you someone passed an exam. The first session tells you whether they will coach you well. Good intros in Vienna look broadly alike: The Mill and CrossFit Route 7 run Foundations courses, Oakton Strength runs a Foundations on-ramp, and Advanced Fitness starts with a movement-focused intro. Use that first meeting to ask:

  • What did you see? A good coach should tell you something specific about how you move — a hip that does not hinge, a shoulder that rides up — and what they will do about it.
  • How will we measure progress? Loads lifted, a repeated benchmark, a body-composition test, or simply attendance. Any answer is better than none.
  • What happens when I travel or get hurt? Video sessions, home programmes and pause policies matter more during a relocation year than any other.
  • What is the commitment? Monthly memberships, session packs and term discounts each lock you in differently. Read the cancellation terms before you sign, not after.

As a frame for how much training is enough, the CDC's adult guideline is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week plus two days of muscle-strengthening work. Two coached strength sessions a week covers the second half of that on its own.

Matching your training to a Vienna address

Vienna is small enough that nothing in this guide is far from anywhere in town. But where you train every day is a reasonable input when you are choosing between blocks, because it is one of the few trips you make four or five times a week.

  • Downtown Vienna, Windover Heights and Vienna Woods — The Mill, On The Way Fitness, Advanced Fitness and F45 are all on or just off Maple Avenue and Church Street. The strongest position if you want to walk or cycle to training, with the W&OD Trail and the Vienna Town Green in the same few blocks.
  • The Tysons and Wolf Trap side — CrossFit Route 7 and the Spring Hill Rec Center are the natural pair, and the Silver Line makes a train-then-train routine realistic for anyone working in Tysons.
  • The Dunn Loring edge — CrossFit Fairfax and the Mosaic District are minutes away, and the Orange Line is on the doorstep.
  • The Flint Hill and Hunter Mill side — Oakton Strength Systems and Oakmont Rec Center sit just west, along with Nottoway Park's trails and courts.

Schools do not follow the same map. Vienna addresses can feed James Madison High School or Oakton High School, through Thoreau Middle or Kilmer Middle and elementary schools including Louise Archer, Marshall Road, Cunningham Park and Vienna Elementary — but boundaries change and they do not follow neighbourhood names. Check any specific address on the FCPS Boundary Locator before you rely on it.

The house as part of the training plan

Many people who train seriously end up with some equipment at home, and that changes what to look for on a tour. A few practical checks:

  • Ceiling height. Overhead pressing and jump rope need more clearance than a typical finished basement offers. Measure it rather than guessing from photos.
  • The floor. A concrete garage or unfinished basement slab takes rubber flooring and dropped weights; a finished room over a joist floor does not, and the people below will notice.
  • Space for a coach. If you plan to use in-home training of the kind On The Way Fitness offers, you need a clear area two people can move in, not just room for a bench.
  • The route out of the door. A house a short ride from the W&OD Trail turns warm-ups and recovery days into something you do from the front door.

Vienna's housing runs from mid-century ramblers to recent rebuilds, and it varies widely on all four. It is worth noting on every tour rather than discovering after closing. For a comparison with a neighbouring market, our guide to personal training and CrossFit in McLean covers the studios on the other side of Tysons.

A median of seven days means half the homes that sold in Vienna went under contract within about a week of listing. For a buyer relocating from out of the area, that is the practical reason to settle the lifestyle questions — which side of town, which commute, which training routine — before the house you want comes up, rather than while you are deciding whether to offer on it.

Frequently asked questions

Look for an NCCA-accredited certification such as NASM, ACE or ACSM, or the NSCA's CSCS for strength and conditioning. A CrossFit Level 1 certificate qualifies a coach to lead classes at an affiliate.

How quickly do homes sell in Vienna, VA?

Bright MLS recorded 757 closed residential sales across 22180, 22181 and 22182 in the twelve months to 9 September 2026, with a median of seven days on market and a median sale price at 100.0% of list.

Planning a move to Vienna?

The routines that make a place feel like home — the 6 a.m. class, the coach who knows your knee, the trail at the end of the street — are the part of a move nobody puts on the checklist. The Keri Shull Team helps buyers relocating into Vienna, McLean, Reston and the wider Northern Virginia area work out which side of town fits how they actually live, before the right house comes up.
